Camping in South of France - Is it do-able without a car? And other questions...

Ok - after a good few years camping in the Vendee and Loire we really fancy going to the South of France but really can't face the drive so are planning to take the train to Avignon.

I think we've found a campsite but am open to other recommendations - basically we want to either get to the campsite by train or within an hours-ish drive from Avignon (still umming and ahhing about whether we need to hire a car)

I'm thinking about heading more towards Agde rather than towards the Cote D'azur. Although Avignon looks lovely and would be happy to be in-land a bit as long as we have a pool and wine.

So, has anyone got train down and not needed to hire a car?
Has anyone got any recommendations for campsites where we can hire a tent/van?

We're looking at going the last two weeks in August (it seems slightly cheaper that July/Aug) - I have a vague recollection of wind from family holidays when we were young - is that why prices are cheaper?

Thank you!

bump - partly out of self interest.
We are mulling over idea of using train to get to somwhere in Europe. Have considered Italy/Barcelona but looking at trainbookers (might not be the name Confused the prices seem a bit high. Now thinking the Summer Special to Avignon might be better - I believe it is every Saturday and thinking same that would like to stay campsite (hire tent or cheap cabin) and preferably get about withouut a car - although prepared to hire one if necessary.

If anybody can help me 0r blabalalablabla (sorry if wrong) it would be super. I really want to do this on reasonable budget so not wanting to stay in most expensive resorts in that area. thanks . k
