October Half Term

Anybody ever done camping then? Anyone planning on camping then? Am I insane to be considering it?

Anyone?

I camped then when I was younger as part of DofE.... and in January too.
I'd probably wait till the week and see what the weather is like, sites aren't likely to be booked up.
And take lots and lots of warm clothes and blankets because it'll be really cold at night!

we camped just for one night last year in the middle of October. We were lucky with the weather - it changed the day after we packed up, as it has a tendancy to do after mid october

I was desperate to camp last October half term but couldn't persuade anyone to come with me and didn't have a car then! This year, I have my own wheels and a super cosy sleeping bag so will try and have a couple of nights away in the tent. I might have to invest in a warmer sleeping bag for ds though as his is quite basic.

We will have EHU and will take a fan heater and an oil filled radiator. I just wondered if it is feasible or if I'm mad.

The October half term is the last camp of the year for us, we usually go to London. Layers are important as are lots of fleece blankets. We use the oil filled radiator and hot air blower as well.

Am hoping to camp in the snow this year (if we get some) But will be for 1 night only and no children.

Ooh, I'd love to do that too!! My friends and I were talking about it last weekend. One of our nearest sites have 3 wooden pods which we thought would be the best place to camp .

I do remember when I camped in January the tent froze inside and out. It was very hard (literally) packing it up when we came home. I don't think I'd do that with my Nevada L. But maybe when DD is bigger and wants an adventure. DH would never join us!

This October half-term I am due to be giving birth (although I wouldn't object to it being sooner).... so I won't be in a tent. :o

We are hoping to camp the weekend before half term in Northumberland . We have done a few Nights before at this time of year. I would recommend hot water bottles and fleecy blankets/ pjs and thermals.

I fancy a weekend in october too.

Thinking the lake district may be nice.

We are planning to camp at October half term, probably in the Lakes, not camped this time of year before but did camp at the beginning of April a couple of years ago and woke to frost on the ground. Only problem we had was the red wine was too to drink it properly! I'm thinking mulled wine or hot chocolate with brandy may be the way to go for October.

I expect we will need lots of hot water bottles, thermals and layers of blankets. I'll be ok because DS2 usually ends up in my sleeping bag with me so I'll have a cuddly hot water bottle

We have had lovely weather in Cornwall and the western Isles of Scotland in Oct. However admit we have got caravan now.

Just planning with DH this eve to fit another weekend before oct half term, sometime oct can be lovely.....

So does anyone one know anywhere around London that may be open off season?

We've camped in extreme cold before and would say handy hints are if your DCs are little get 0F sleeping bags, double them up to 2 kids in 1 bag then put the bag inside the 2nd sleeping bag. Keeps them like toast, we also wore fleece to bed and kept sock on (much to DDs disgust). Little tent heaters are great. If you think it will snow, probably not in UK but you never know, be really careful about where you position your tent. We camped in Feb in California which we didn't see as a snow risk, woke up to screaming 9 & 7 year old at 1am as it had suddenly snowed so heavily that our North Face 4 season all singing all dancing tent had collapsed on their side under the weight of the wet snow, admittedly there was 2 foot in 3 hours Packing up at 1am cold wet and covered in snow, then trying to fit snow chains to get out of the park we were in was not fun :( Having said that my 4DCs still love to camp and they prefer the cold as at least you can make yourself warm unlike when it is baking and you just can't get cool :)

We have a hot air heater for the living area and a oil filled rad for the bed pod so I am hoping we will be toasty!

Abby Wood and Crystal Palace are full in London for half term which is a real pain. I am just trying to research others ATM but there are some really mixed reviews so I am getting a wee bit worried.

We used to live very near this site which looked nice enough, though surrounding areas are quite industrial (it's near Ikea if you need a wet weather activity!).

we too are thinking of camping in half-term. What with the forthcoming 'Indian Summer' it might not be too bad! Good luck and stay warm!
