Camping lighting

We have bought several different lighting options but none have proved very effective any good suggestions?

Aldi do a battery powered UFO light, its got loads of led's and is very bright, the batteries last a while too.

They don't always do camping gear though you have to check out their weekly specials.

The best is a Tilley lamp but requires paraffin so perhaps a little dangerous in a tent. We have one when I go with my Dad and it gives off loads of heat which is lovely.

When I camp alone with DS, we have an assortment of LED fairy lights on the ceiling, a magnetic LED spotlight and various battery powered lanterns and head-torches.

electric hook up is the only way except when you have a power cut for 2 nights out of 7 like we did last week

What about wind up lamps? My dad lent us a great one last year, the power lasted days! It was great for a glow just so we could see each other in the tent, but needed torches for looking through cases/going over to the toilet in the dark.

I have never found a wind up lantern that was any use! You wind for hours and they get dimmer and dimmer in minutes! [[http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000001150&categoryid=1045 this] is the lantern I want, but unfortunately, its not available in the UK!

We have a UFO light which is as yet untested (it's a Vango one and while it's bright I wouldn't recommend as it seems their QC person was on holiday when they made the entire batch), and an LED lantern. If you search on Amazon for 300 lumen lantern you'll get three different brands of the exact same lantern which a huge difference in price. That one went to Camp Bestival with us and was brilliant for being generally able to SEE rather than having to point a torch at stuff all the time.

We also have two headtorches, a mini Maglite which sometimes goes camping and sometimes stays at home for powercuts, a wind-up lantern (which is shit, but does for a nightlight for DD) and a hurricane lantern for outside ambience and warding off bugs (citronella paraffin).

If no ehu, we use gelert hanging capsule lanterns. we have one hanging in each bedroom. And use head torches for moving around outside.

If we have ehu, we use a car inspection lamp.

loads of people have comented on out tiny little lantern as is chucks out a great light for its size, runs for ages on 3 AA's too. Brand is silverpoint and they are the dogs nuts they do a few in their range, ours is this
but their larger day light lantern would light up a good area too

At the time it was sold by Amazon (not someone on Amazon MArketplace) and it was only priced at £18 or so.

This thing is seriously bright - turns night into day. I've struggled with LED lanterns and head torches where you still spend time in a gloomy sem-dark tent.

This lamp runs on 3xD cells (not piddly AAA cells) an will last for around 26hours on its brightest setting.

We got one of these after we gave up on a rechargeable lantern (after less than 2 weeks it was taking >12 hrs to charge, and still not managing to give reading light for 2 hours in the evening).

We've only used the new one for a couple of nights so far, but already much more impressed as it works!.
