Toilet question

What is it with various people in various topics talking about peeing in the bushes when they go camping. This is what gives camping a bad name. Why would you pee around where you are camping? I have a friend who said she told her boys to do this. I didn't say anything at the time as I was so shocked and she is a guide leader, but I think it's absolutely disgusting. Use toilets or portapotties or bucket with lid, please. Don't pee on or near the pitch.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

nope

I think it's grim too.

The nitrates in urine are good for soil. I'm happy to wee in bushes as long as it's not one of those super-concentrated ones that you've held on to for so long they stink. Then that's time to trek to the toilet.

Pooing is another matter entirely. I know many people who happily poo in bushes near their tents then dig it in the ground. Too much for me, I have to trek to the toilets or hold it in.

hotandhappy · 28/04/2011 12:38

ooo i only do this in the middle of the night and i venture into the bushes at back of the tent rather than get attacked by a lone wolf in way to the loo block.

Oh Yuk. I'm never going camping AGAIN. I had no idea people were that minging. Poos as well you say? Boak!

Bloody well bring your own chemical loo if you are too lazy to trek to the loo in the middle of the night.

Filthy fuckers.

hotandhappy · 28/04/2011 17:00

pooing is a no no i agree - peeing in an emergency is far more environmently friendly than dunking galons of illuminous blue chemical waste down the drains surely?

Butterbur · 28/04/2011 17:08

So why does anyone ever bother to pee in the loo? Just squat down outside M&S, or outside your own front door and let loose.

Could it be because pee smells disgusting? Who wants to camp where other people have been peeing? Who wants to let their children play amongst the bushes and trees, knowing they are in effect a urinal?

LittleSkink · 28/04/2011 19:15

come on folks a Luggable loo or Kampa Khazi is only £20 !

we use a Thetford Porta Potti 345 and its the best thing we ever got for camping. Perfect for kids and grownups a-like. And you can get organic chemicals for them (or use none, as some people do)

SybilBeddows · 28/04/2011 19:22

it does seem a little odd being precious about the occasional human child pee in the bushes when you are on a site with sheep wandering round pooing all over the place though.

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/04/2011 20:24

I agree, Butterbur, pee does smell disgusting. I don't want to camp where other people have peed, especially these last two weeks where there's been no rain at all. Yuk! Get yourselves portapotties, people, or just go to the loo.

Hotandhappy, have you ever heard of anyone being attacked on a campsite in the middle of the night? Or do you really mean wolves and you don't camp here in the UK?

alien abduction?

vickster11 · 28/04/2011 21:27

Im going to the the kampa khazi loo as my and my lo always wake up in the middle of the night for a wee. Whats the best thing to put down the loo to stop it smelling in the night? Till I empty it in the morning.

vickster11 · 28/04/2011 21:27

meant to say me and my lo

hotandhappy · 28/04/2011 21:53

these buckets.... if they just have wee in em do you just take to loo block and tip down the loo or do you go to a special place?

DiscoDaisy · 28/04/2011 21:58

Our tent has a living room with bedrooms off it which have zip up doors. We use a chemical toilet in the living room at night. The next morning we empty it at the chemical toilet point on the campsite.

Icoulddoitbetter · 28/04/2011 22:06

I have a travel john

here

It's great, and was a real life saver last time I camped, when we were miles away from the loo and I was PG (As I will be when we go camping this year too, lovely).

DH pees in the bushes though [cgrin]

vickster11 · 28/04/2011 22:42

No Im quite happy to go and empty it in the morning down the toilet and wash the bucket thing out again.

I dont want to use chemicals as I have a very young child who tries to open and eat/drink everything in site.

Thanks for the link of the travel john, I will order some.

GnomeDePlume · 29/04/2011 18:15

While urine is good for the soil, the plants which particularly likes urine soaked soil are stinging nettles. So peeing in the bushes could give you a bit of a surprise if someone has got there before you - you have been warned!
