thats all folks -any recommendations either way for vendee campsites around St jean de monts or a little further south Sables is far enough though ta.

Not La Yole (sorry but we did a bunk form there and can't get unitl in as to small really)

We can't do the il de rae as the camp we like is always full in August

happy with brittany sites if you know a good one that isn't to far between Normandy and vendee to stop along the tottle down there

thanks very much in advanced Grin

We stayed at the Keycamp site at St Jean de Monts.

It was really lovely but the only thing is that the beach is about 3 miles away.

popcal · 13/04/2011 13:51

Hi we stayed at Le Clarys Plage last August, only for 3 nights, on our way back from Charente Maritime and it was awful. Not so much the site itself, showers pool etc were great but it was very noisy at night and the area (les mouettes) was awful. I think South Vendee is better.

ivykaty44 · 13/04/2011 14:54

thanks popcal - have not looked at that site and will now make sure it doesn't go on the list.

vintag - what was the name of the campsite?

sorry Ivy - can't remember.

I just remember it was a long walk to the beach.

thanks for answering Grin

Well... are you just camping or do you need a mobile home?

If camping, my SIL recommends "l'orgatte" in Notre dame de monts - in the sand dunes, on the beach, with cycle paths running everywhere.

I find St Jean too built-up and busy - with a road running at the back of the beach;

She says Notre dame de monts is very "natural".

You'd better not be going on our dates though cos I haven't booked yet!

Nikkid21 · 13/04/2011 21:16

We are booked onto camping la guyonniere for 12 nights in august. Our first time to the vendee but it rates vary highly on uk campsite. Is just over the lake from la garengoire which seems v popular on mumsnet.

We went for guyonniere because of the huge pitches, farm animals on site and lack of eorocamp, keycamp etc. Am hoping that it makes for a quieter site. The trade off us that we are 10km from the beach but dc's prefer the pool anyway.

BarkingHarriet · 13/04/2011 21:32

Been to La Yole - didn't rate it really.

I loved Camping Bel at La Tranche Sur Mer - just beyond Sables but worth it. Beach is about 5 mins from the campsite, the town is about 10 mins level walk (so good for pushchairs or bikes), supermarket 5 mins in the other direction. Loads of cycle paths nearby, ans the site has several playparks and a swimming pool. But one of the best things for me was the kids films - every night the owner put a film on a big tv outside the bar and all the kids went up in their pj's to watch (whilst of course their parents sat in the bar) then absolute silence was enforced overnight. Loved it.

But of course, we went about 5 years ago, before all the terrible floods, so I don't know how that affected the site.

ivykaty44 · 14/04/2011 08:27

Thanks for -jam, I have looked at the municipal site and also found another very close which looks good and atm, was thinking that Notre dame de mont would be quiter than st jean de mont and we have bikes - in fact this will be the only transport we use.

nikki - the site looks lovely but with bikes only as transport 95% of the time I think we will have to bypass.

Barkingthanks for that one - it may be a bit far

SIL says the other sites are not as nice, but it depends what you want. There is no pool (which is a plus for us rather than a minus), and there are some informal kids activities apparantly.

When are you going?

ivykaty44 · 14/04/2011 12:59

latter half of august, going to stop at bayeaux at a site we know for a couple of days on the way down, then head for dol de bretagne, again at a site we know, for a couple of days and then onto the vendee - we have to have pool for dd2 as she likes swimming and it makes life easy for us to read by pool or on beach - so we all get what we want Grin So later in august by the time we get there when it always seems a lot have gone home and there is a bit more space around the camp sites.

The south Vendée is definately nicer than the north. Les Conches is my favourite spot on the coast, or La tranche sur Mer if you want a town.

if you don't mind being away from the beach then this is our favourite site: www.campinglajoletiere.fr/

It is small,(but pitches are a good size) never crowded, has a good sized heated pool, and is in the Forest of Mervent area. It is about 45 minutes drive to the coast, but there is plenty to do nearby.

suwoo · 19/04/2011 18:08

We stayed at this one last year. Was good.

ljb11 · 08/05/2011 23:07

La Garangeoire really is great. Looking around the nearer they are to the beach the busier they feel and the smaller the pitches.

dreamingofsun · 09/05/2011 08:58

garangeoire - excellent site. shame it couldn't be moved to brittany as didn't like north vendee. canvas and thompson pitches best, some of the others were a bit smaller

ENormaSnob · 09/05/2011 18:27

La garangeoire was lovely.

electricslide · 09/05/2011 19:41

Barkingharriet- we did our fifth year at Bel last summer and the site was just as good as ever. The dunes shifted a bit on the beach and the beach is a bit different (the sands have moved so there's a mini bit of sea before another sandbank and then the actual sea). But other than that there was no sign of the flood.

AgentProvocateur · 09/05/2011 20:12

We were at the same place as Suwoo last year (and another MN-er - Mmeblueberry, I think her name was).

It is right on the coast, and a short cycle from a lovely town and a larger resorts with loads of nice places to eat. We went in July, and it was great weather during the day, but freezing at night. We didn't use our car the whole fortnight - we cycled everywhere.

We've booked to go back again this year, too.

SusanneLinder · 10/05/2011 10:44

I liked la Yole, however agree with Clarys Plage-awful place!! It was that bad we complained to Keycamp back home and got moved to La Yole that day. That was 2006,so see things haven't improved much.

South Vendee may be better-have you tried uk campsite for recommendations?

wickedfairy · 10/05/2011 13:47

Sorry for hijacking - Electricslide - any more info on Camping Bel please? We have booked and are going for 3 weeks at the end of June. Have a 4yo and baby will be 11 months.

Any advice ont he site, where is best to go in the surrounding area? Saw some older reviews on here saying it was good, but would be lovely to hear from someone who has been recently!

Thanks Smile
