How early do you book?

Having failed to find anywhere to go this weekend and also having had difficulty earlier in the summer holidays I'm wondering how organised I need to be for next year.

Clearly lots of people don't wait until the long range weather forecast before booking (my mistake) but just how many months in advance should I book?

Looking at UK campsites only.

sommer hols, bank holidays - about 2 months in advance. other than that I don*t bother with booking at all.

Depends where it is, main summer break about 2 months before, most others the week before. Have stayed at 2 sites this year which didn't require a deposit, they weren't fancy but great not to worry about wasting money.

booked main summer hols in March, as wanted 4 pitches together. Also booked Spring Bank at a similar time. Non summer holiday weekends we book 3/4 weeks in advance usually, though may try a couple of days ahead if we are free for the weekend and the forecast is good

I tried to book for this weekend last weekend but haven't been able to find anything at all.

In the Uk december, eurpoe turn up and get in to a campsite Grin it is very very different abroad form the Uk even though we tryed in Novemeber for a site in Bristol we failed....

CoffeeMad · 26/08/2010 17:38

OMG ivykaty44 - you just turn up (in France)! I just spat my coffee out! I would be scared stiff there would be no spaces Shock

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2010 17:48

I have been camping abroad on my own with my dd's since dd was 18 months old - I have never booked a campsite in france or spain in aorund 8 summers of camping in eurpoe, have been into holland aswell and germany and not once booked.

We got caught out one night - we tuned up and they had spaces at this site but it was busy and noisey and aorund 50 euros a pitch so we stayed one night and moved on...

The first time I took dd's away and dd2 was 18 months and dd1 was 8 that holiday - we had a ball, I gave dd1 the map and said we need to be around here tonight you direct and odn't worry if you go wrong we can alwya find somewhere to stay - so we would head for a general direction and stay where we ended up and have 2-3 night. We did this for 4 weeks from santandar to st malo

Wow I am very impressed! You must have had a great time.

I think I would over analyse everthing in my mind that could go wrong, hence I am a meticulous planner.

Thx CoffeeMad we are going to give it a miss this weekend. I got so fed up at not finding anywhere I liked that had space we've decided to stay at home and see friends instead. Smile
