Actually i have been camping on and off all my life but have never taken the Dd's on my own before. Until the weekend! We went to Morfa Bychyn nr Porthmadog, some friends were staying on the Haven site so we spent the day and evenings with them but went back to the site to sleep. I took the new quechua 4.1 which was great especially with the vango porch on the front. The tent coped well in the rain and stayed dry even though the ground was very boggy. I did find it hard work but am really chuffed that I have done it and am ready to go again.
Am off to Padstow on thursday but OH is coming with us this time.

Well done! I'm impressed with all the hardy women on here who just pack up and go with their dcs - its a myth that we are the weaker sex - I know loads of blokes who are a bit wussy about camping, yet their other halves (wo)manfully sling tents up on their own, whilst wrangling a couple of children and cooking the dinner on a two ring burner!

I'm off myself at the weekend with my two, another female friend and her DS - not a man in sight! Grin

I have a pop up tent, it's sooo easy and I do have a teenager to "help".
I am really proud of myself especially as I am scared of the dark and there was very little lighting on the site. Can't wait to go again.
I regularly go camping without men as I am a Guide Leader it's great fun.Grin

Maybe I will become braver! Feel better that you scared dark too: had ridiculous moment when had gone off on own in dark to toilet, became lost and scared! Must do better Blush

My DH refuses to camp. Went for the first time with my sister and the kids but have seriously got the bug and want to go again. However I can't rely on my sister to come every time. How do you lot manage to pitch a tent on your own?

Ineed2 · 10/08/2010 22:09

Pinkmagic...A pop up, quechua 4.1, which I can even get back in the bag. I have had other 4 man tents which I could do with a small amount of help from one of the Dd's. I went with a friend last year with a vango Idaho [it leaked] and put it up with help from my 6 year old.
The sales person in Yeomans told me that most of the smaller outwell tents can be put up by one person with a child to hold one pole while you put the other in, although I haven't tried it.
The smaller tunnel tents are also ok because if you can peg out the front or back hoop the rest should lift without too much trouble.
Makeupmummy.. I always take a torch to the loo, for the return journey!!

May just take a bucket: it was quite far down tree lined path in total darkness!! So suppose no one would see me pee! On second night took one of solar lights and placed at end of correct path to get back to tent. I had a torch, but was still bit lost, as can't see well in dark, and think was also bit scared (I know, it's sad from grown woman). But am eagerly anticipating next trip. My DH pitches Vango tunel tent and Quecha base seconds by self with minimal help from me or 8 year old (I am usually occupied trying to stop 2 yr old from "helping" with the hammer thing!

Read all the other camping "first timers" threads - we all go off with trepidation and come back like Zenia Warrier Princess after having survived the experience!

I too have a DH who is less than lukewarm about camping, but its amazing how many of my mates are keen - I've not been with the same people twice yet!

You will be fine - choose somewhere local and just go for a night or two.
