I've never stayed there, but used to live quite close by.

The number 3 bus goes from there right into Central London. The bus goes past the Houses of Parliament, up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square and on to Picadilly Circus and then Oxford Circus.

There are also mainline stations (one at Crystal Palace itself) which can get you to London Bridge, Victoria, Blackfriars (via bus to West Norwood).

Crystal Palace itself is quite interesting, really good park (with dinosaurs if kids are interested). Some decent one-off sort of shops and cafes in Crystal Palace (the triangle as it's known locally) also a Sainsburys. Not too far away is Brockwell Lido and Tooting Bec lido which is meant to be better (never been).

In fact you could spend your entire time never venturing north of the river and have a fab time.

Your best bet is to get an Oyster card when you arrive, or order by post. Then you can put money on as you need it. You can use it on the bus, tube, train (I'll just check you can use it on the mainlines from around CP and get back to you)

If you have DCs up to the age of 10 (and look under 10) then they can travel with you for free on buses and trams. If they are 11-15 you need to get them a photocard to get the same free travel benefits. You have to pay an application fee, but it's credited to the card and you get it back if you don't use it. Make sure you get the non-resident one as it's cheaper. You have to get this well in advance though.

OK, I think you should be able to pick up an Oyster at Crystal Palace station. Or from a shop that does Oyster (been a long while since I had to get one)

Alternatively if you don't fancy the Oyster you can buy a One-day travelcard which I think works out at £6.30. If you have the Oyster and you travel quite a bit in a day then you pay no more than a travelcard. However, if you buy a travelcard and only take a couple of bus journeys then you pay more than you would have with an Oyster card.

If you get an Oyster don't forget to ask for any remaining balance to be returned to you at the station on your last day.

More details (and more reliable info) on this link

Trams? They're in South London/Croydon. They run from the Croydon area and further out to Wimbledon.
