Camping with puppy

Ok we are going camping in Aug with our kids and puppy who will be 5months by then. He is crate trained and so will have him in with us during the night and we have a stake thing for the ground for during the day. BUT if we need to go out and cant take him with us, would we be better to leave him inside crated??
His not a small dog, in fact his already very big now. Any hints tips would be great

Can you find a kennels near the campsite where you're staying to put him in that one day? Campsites won't let you leave him in a crate in the tent all day. If nothing else it can get very hot in a closed tent and he could overheat, never mind if he gets scared and wines/barks all day and annoys the other campers.
