Scotland recommendations

Ok so we are thinking of going to Scotland in October half term with the caravan. DCs have never been so we want to go somewhere with lots to do should the weather be bad, but also with beautiful outdoors whenever possible.
We live in the north west so to get to Glasgow is about 3 hours and for young children we can't really go much further without an overnight stop which doesn't really appeal. So where do people recommend? At the moment we are thinking around Peebles as its not far from Edinburgh, but could also venture Northumberland way? help please!

Culzean Castle is SW Scotland

Traquair House is near Peebles

Biggar has some museums in it.

Alnwick Castle is in Northumberland.

NB Northumberland is in Engerland?

around Peebles is lovely but not much to do in bad weather Edinburgh is a brilliant place everything to do under the sun(or rain)

Stirlingshire is great - lots to do but easy access to indoor stuff. Check out Stirling itself, Comrie, Callander and Loch Lomond

We've been 3 times this year to Hoddom Castle which is near Annan, not too far off the motorway past Gretna. great walks, a golf course, bar and shop, nice playground. Lots to see locally too.

Love the look of Hoddom castle, but it shuts half way through half term!
