Feel ashamed , should I skip dinner

Hi everyone I hope you are well

I'm currently calorie counting and I've been on countless diets before where I have restricted "bad food" I can't seem to appreciate and understand that you can literally eat whatever you want on a calorie deficit.

All I've eaten today is 500 calories worth of chocolate and crisps :( it's made me feel as if I'm going to gain weight and I've ruined everything . The dinner I have planned is only 500 calories so I would even have calories left over if I did eat dinner but I feel disgusting and guilty and like I shouldn't even eat dinner.

Someone reassure me I feel sick

Whatever you do, try not to restrict your eating as a consequence of what you’ve eaten earlier on. I did that for years and was diagnosed with non purging bulimia a few months ago.

Enjoy your dinner and have a better day with less junk food tomorrow. You got this!

StasisMom · 06/11/2024 18:14

Eat your dinner - something healthy to try to compensate the crisis and chocolate. Don't worry.

Karmakamelion · 06/11/2024 18:14

This is really worrying. You are not disgusting. You have eaten food not harmed anyone. Please get help if this is really how you feel xx

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 06/11/2024 18:14

No you shouldn’t skip dinner. You have the calories left and you should use them.
if you skip dinner you’re carrying on bad habits. Have dinner and then reset tomorrow.

Painauraison · 06/11/2024 18:18

It was just a blip, don't worry about it. Have a healthy, filling dinner. I fall into this type of behaviour when I'm stressed or don't make myself proper meals.

Onehappymam · 06/11/2024 18:19

Drop the guilt, draw a line under it and eat your dinner.

Do your hormones have anything to do with what you ate earlier? I find that when I ovulate and the days leading up to my period I have an insatiable appetite and crave junk.

Other than calories, do you track anything else? A diet high in protein & fibre keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Tracking calories alone is a grim existence.

belleandsansebastian · 06/11/2024 18:20

Are you actually hungry though? If you are then eat. If you're not there's no point eating just because you can.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 06/11/2024 18:21

It’s one day. Have dinner and get back on track tomorrow.
It could be that your diet is so strict that it led to you binging. If you incorporate more flexibility it may be more effective in the long run.

siemprefat · 06/11/2024 18:21

Thanks everyone. I will eat the dinner however it is making me feel very down and feels like I messed up.

I'm scared because of I'm feeling like this if I eat the dinner I may binge .

Can someone reassure me that no matter what I eat as long as within my deficit I'll still lose weight?

Have you sought professional help OP?

Mumsnet's not always the best place to post if you have an eating disorder.

As well meaning as a lot of people are, they really don't help if they have their own issues around food.

Sixpence39 · 06/11/2024 18:24

Your body needs nutrients and fuel. If all you've had today is junk food have a really tasty, healthy meal that gives your body all the vitamins, protein etc it needs. Nutrients are way more important that calories for your overall wellbeing and you'll be just fine - it's only one day.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 06/11/2024 18:45

Go and throw all the junk food out, and then you can’t even if you want to.
OP please get some psychological support alongside your diet. Your thoughts are very self loathing and you are worth more than that.

Wednesdaysdrag · 06/11/2024 18:54

Op, those feelings around food really need dealing with. Professionally.

You will lose weight if you are in a calorie deficit, if the deficit is consistent and you give it enough time. Everyone’s weight can fluctuate up and down a few pounds for no real reason. Losing weight is rarely linear and it sounds like you are the type of person to get really down unless you see the axles coming down every time you get on them.

What is important is health. And your mental health. And you are showing signs of not being healthy mentally or physically. Thinking about skipping meals to make up for eating chocolate, especially when you are still hitting your calorie goals is not healthy. It won’t help you reach your goals. It will make you worse. You have eaten some food, punishing yourself won’t help.

I say this as someone who has been through very similar.

Why do you think having your dinner will make you binge?

user2848502016 · 06/11/2024 18:59

Eat your dinner, it's total calories that matter.
Anyway after eating crisps and chocolate all day you need some vegetables really!

sugarplum33 · 06/11/2024 19:14

500 calories of crisps and chocolate isn't even that much! You've had what maybe a couple of bags of crisps and a few strips of chocolate? I once sat and ate a 700 calorie share bag of crisps all to myself and I'd do it again. Come back when you've managed a proper feast Grin

Joking aside, you sound like you're really struggling and these feelings towards food are not normal or healthy. You need to eat your dinner, move on and just try to eat a more nutritious menu tomorrow. A few crisps won't make or break anything and they certainly don't make you disgusting!

I was just about to say this. That's not a binge, it's hardly anything! A small bar of Dairy Milk and a grab bag of Walkers would take you pretty close to 500 cals and not even fill a hole in most people's stomachs.
