Hi
Went to the groceries and since it's the Christmas time was finding it hard to find a parking space after bit of a struggle I did manage to find one. While I was reverse parking in the Bay some guy quickly came racing his car into the same bay.
I was upset and got out of the car and said I was parking in there and that was quite rude actually. The guy got upset and said sorry its not Rude if you dont realise. But it clearly looked as he speedily parked and did feel like as if he knew what he was doing. He went out of the Bay and started cursing in his mouth as he paased by.Now I feel guilty that I might have upset them and shouldnt have said the word rude to them.
Any advices to deal with such situations in future are welcome as well.

I think you were really lucky they left and let you have it- that could have turned nasty and he could have just locked up and walked away really, but good for you telling them. I wouldn’t give it a second thought now.
I’m not sure someone could have nipped into a space I was preparing to reverse into though tbh, they wouldn’t have been able to swing into it without hitting my wheel arch, how far away from the space were you? Maybe it wasn’t actually obvious to him?

Yeah this. If I’m reversing into a space it’s very obvious I’m doing that and nobody would be able to nip in without hitting my car, if you were miles past the space it’s very possible he didn’t even know what you were doing.

So I gave an indicator to the left as i wanted to park on the left bay and took the right turn I have got a Skoda octavia so I had to allowmyself a bit of room. They had a smaller car like Polo volkswagen for instance that's how managed to nip in.I did consider that they may have not seen my signal can't rule out the chance of having not seen it that's why feeling bad about it. Should have ignored in the first place.

In an alternate timeline, you crashed into each other, causing a world of grief for both of you. That evening you wished hard that you'd never collided. Your wish was granted and you ended up with today's situation....

Think nothing of it and enjoy your Christmas!

PrincessOfPreschool · 21/12/2024 16:33

People get snotty at Christmas. Someone once yelled at me for parking in mother and child space doing I didn't have a child. It was true, I genuinely didn't see the sign as not familiar with supermarket. Of course, I moved out quickly and gave her the space. While she was parking I realised she had a 'child' of about 13 with her! Cheeky so and so! But anyway, I would rather not have taken up a mother/ baby space, just a shame I didn't move out for an actual baby.

OldTinHat · 21/12/2024 16:37

You've kind of got to suck it up.

I waited two and a half hours for my allocated disabled bay to be free (allocated to me, my blue badge, with the council, but painted white so not worth the paint it's edged in!). The car in it left, I went out with my keys to move my car off the double yellows and a neighbour over the road parked in the space. He even hooted and waved at me!

ThatOpalSeal · 21/12/2024 16:40

@OldTinHat So sorry to hear that. How upsetting.

I strongly recommend a therapeutic watch of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Exactly the same thing happens to one of the characters and the way her face changes as she.decides that she's not going to take it meekly is priceless.

Cracking scene.

Naah, I'm gonna guess he was being a bit of a cheeky twat and chancing his arm in the hope that you'd probably drive off. He was the one in the wrong. Good on you for saying something.

LeaveALittleNote · 21/12/2024 16:59

I’ve had this happen to me twice. Both times it was women who did it, and they did it on purpose as I was indicating my way in. Both times I got out the car and calmly said to them “You can’t do that. Please move.” Both times they protested a little bit, but then moved. If you can be calm but firm it seems to work. If it was an aggressive-looking man I would probably not say anything though for fear of being harmed.

Jostuki · 21/12/2024 17:02

He snaked you.

Alls fair in love and parking.

Were you indicating?

ThereIsALifeOutThere · 21/12/2024 17:08

I’ve that. From an older couple too.

Its infuriating.

And no @Jostuki , having your light on to notify you’re turning doesn’t make a difference.

Portakalkedi · 21/12/2024 17:13

You can't always know what people are planning to do though. Yesterday I drove towards the blue badge spaces. One car was signalling to reverse out so I stopped behind and waited. There was another car in the space on the left with reversing lights on, so about to leave anyone would assume. I went into the now empty bay, and the man parked in the space to the left shouted at me that he was waiting for that space. I told him to keep his wig on and that there was no need to shout as I am not a mind reader, then I moved out of the space so he could have it. The one he'd been in was not a disabled space. He then got his dog out of the car and jogged off in the the opposite direction to the supermarket. Twat. I won't do that again.

I have to say "Honey, how many of those hormones are you taking?!" has a new resonance that it didn't have in my 20s!

ThatOpalSeal · 21/12/2024 20:08

@Jostuki yes I indicated towards the left as I intended to park on that side.

Thankyou all for your responses really appreciate it 😊 I think the best way would be to either ignore such people or to choose words more sensibly next time when i was try to be assertive.

But... you won? What's the issue? He swore a bit because he didn't. I don't think I could get her up over this.
As someone who has got 0 food (and minimal presents) in for Xmas I'm planning to spend most of my day similarly swearing under my breath in sainsburies car park... it's the season!

leafybrew · 22/12/2024 07:09

I think anyone reversing into a space is idiotic as surely you need to get to the boot to put your shopping away??

It's plain old commonsense.

WonderingWanda · 22/12/2024 07:16

I suspect he knew he was in the wrong and didn't expect to be challenged about it. Indicated as I was approaching a space the other day, slowed down and started to position my car at an angle, as I went past the space the car behind decided to pull up to within about a foot of my bumper so I couldn't reverse into the space....even though I'd indicated, turned and had my reversing light on, he didn't even want that space, he just couldn't be arsed to let me park (FYI I am not a slow dithery driver) He clearly hadn't banked on my stubborn side...I proceeded to reverse the foot back so my towbar was almost touching his car and then just waited until I he realised he wasn't getting past unless he let me park. Some men (and a few women but mostly men) are just bullies behind the wheel.

You probably should.
Not the least because attacking people and making fun of them just because is never a good move

There's enough of a gap at the back of the space for me to get to the boot of my car. I prefer reversing into spaces as I find it easier than going in nose first. It's also safer when leaving the car park to be able to pull straight out from the space.

gamerchick · 22/12/2024 08:54

It's always like that this time of year. You have to be tough. People have physical fights over parking spaces.

Toughen up and go nose in. Better to get to the boot that way anyway. Then be tough backing back out. Don't wait for people to stop to let you out because few do.

leafybrew · 22/12/2024 09:29

Erm I'm not actually attacking anyone. I'm making a point in a light-hearted fashion.

I forgot that no joking allowed - especially just before Christmas...if you want to back into a space in a supermarket - you go right ahead.

Tessasanderson · 23/12/2024 15:29

I have had this happen before. The car driver didnt give a hoot. Until i pointed out they were going to be leaving their car parked there unattended.......

I had no intention of doing anything other than feeding my baby ds in the back of my car but it made me laugh that they came back after 5 mins & 10 mins just to check on their car.

I always reverse in. I can get the shopping in the boot by carrying it down and putting it in if I can't get the trolley there. It's easier to reverse in and safer to drive out forwards into traffic.

In what way is it idiotic? Surely backing into traffic you can't see causes more issues?
