son being bullied by teacher

This is a very weird scenario to have to post about but DS has come home for the past term constantly in a bad mood and crying at the smallest of interactions at home. I’ve had the feeling that something was happening at school and that he was being bullied. he’s opened up and claimed he’s been receiving threats from one of the technicians at the school. The staff member has said he “knows where you live so you need to watch out” and “you’re lucky i haven’t caught you outside of school” and “i’m going to f* you up watch”. not only is this highly inappropriate from the staff member to say but i’ve spoken multiple of DS friends who can confirm these things happening. DS has no problems with any other member of staff before this incident and I have been told by multiple teachers on parents evening that he is a very good child albeit a bit immature for his age and chatty.
How do I approach the school about this?

For a staff member to make these threats to a student is very concerning.

Verifying the threats would come from your DS’s evidence, other pupils confirming this and/or the technician admitting this happened. Does the evidence from other pupils confirm what was said on each occasion? Are some witnesses independent, that is not close friends with your son.

The threats seem very specific. Do you or your DS have any idea what’s behind them? Why is the staff member targeting your DS?

The next step is a meeting with the school to report what’s happened. Give them your detailed evidence of what was said on each date and how this has been witnessed. Be calm and factual, but tell them you are very concerned. It’s likely they’ll need to collect information and report back to you. However, your information should be taken very seriously. There should be an agreement to get back to you in 2/3 days.

Until the school has investigated, your DS shouldn’t have contact with the technician, so the school should undertake to arrange this.

Please let us know what response you get and best wishes at this anxious time.

How old is your child?

MixedCouple2 · 04/07/2024 03:14

Sounds like the 90s and early 2000s. This was normal. I was racial bullied at school by 4 teachers. No one cared.
Had to grow thicker skin and push through. My DB was bullied like this by the IT teacher who threatened him like your DS was and said he will get his group to meet them outside. Again grew thicker skin and had to fight back snd not show weakness. It was the way back then.
The stories we have are insane. Teachers and pupils dating etc etc madness. Wouldn't be acceptable now but still happens.

I would get your ducka in the row. Get things written down and report it properly to both school and Police.

Edingril · 04/07/2024 03:17

Why haven't you reported to the police?

VashtaNerada · 04/07/2024 03:59

This is horrendous. I would write a log of everything that he can remember (with dates if possible) and who the witnesses are and submit that to the school. They will need to carry out an investigation but I’d imagine that staff member could well end up losing their job.

BCBird · 04/07/2024 04:07

Teacher here. U must report this immediately. If this is found to.be true it is disgraceful behaviour.

combinationpadlock · 04/07/2024 04:24

I don't understand your question? you ring the head and tell them. And you follow up with an email.

Lostworlds · 04/07/2024 04:27

Also teacher here, I would report to the school immediately and ask for a meeting to discuss this. This is serious and seems very personal.

I would write down everything your son and friends have said and would email to the head teacher and follow up with a phonecall.

RedHelenB · 04/07/2024 05:42

When and where is this happening? There isn't usually much interaction with school technicians. But you need to contact school this morning, it needs investigating.

bergamotorange · 04/07/2024 05:45

Put it in writing immediately to the school.

Also consider reporting to the police.

I pulled my daughter out of one of her classes in year 8 i think it was, as she was being harrassed by a teacher. She would slap her around the head and yell at her for not understanding. Teacher was investigated and she was removed from that teachers class and the teacher was going under training how to deal with kids!
Kind of thought they would get that wanting to be a teacher. Though a few other teachers let the kids do reports on why their lives would be better if my daughter wasn't around. Fantastic environment! She eventually wanted to move schools -she had refused to let them win before that ...but not before lasting damage with an eating disorder and self harming. Sadly there's some messed up teachers around! I'd go as high as you can with that as it's very threatening and agree with talking to police as well.

Oblomov24 · 08/07/2024 04:55

Goodness, surely you have already emailed Head to report this?

Tinkerbot · 08/07/2024 05:48

As he is using ‘I know where you live threats’ I’d certainly consider speaking to the police if you aren’t happy with school response.

LakeTiticaca · 08/07/2024 06:14

Call the police
This person should be nowhere near kids

YenSon · 08/07/2024 06:18

Email the headteacher with the words ‘complaint, staff conduct and safeguarding concern’ in the heading. Insist this is investigated and if it meets the threshold, referred to the LADO.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/07/2024 06:58

Have you contacted the school op?

Excuse me what! This sounds fantastic and I can’t believe it actually happened. What on earth.

pollyglot · 08/07/2024 07:08

Can you correct your overly dramatic title? It wasn't a teacher, was it. Maxine Carr was also described as being a "teacher". She wasn't. I am so sorry to hear what has happened to your lad.

Agree! Multiple teachers getting children to write assignments on what life would be like if another pupil not around? So across different school years/classed? Different subjects?!

NutellaWithEverything · 08/07/2024 07:15

How do you approach the school???
You go straight to the head and ask for an urgent safeguarding meeting.

Victoriancat · 08/07/2024 07:21

Okay so you storm in with said child to the headteacher, child realises severity of situation and will tell you if it's actually true or not.

BiscuityBoyle · 08/07/2024 07:24

Speak to the head but also contact the police and the chair of governors.

This, but taking them to the police before it after the also report the severity of the threat?
Actually police first before school this morning @chocolatelover57 then when you go into speak to head this morning you can let them know the police have been informed. The staff member has said he “knows where you live so you need to watch out” and “you’re lucky i haven’t caught you outside of school” and “i’m going to f* you up watch”. must have been terrifying to hear, but at least you have the names of all the witnesses to pass to the police.

SmileyClare · 08/07/2024 07:48

What sort of “technician” is this person?

We had a lab technician at a secondary school I worked at with learning difficulties and Tourette’s. The job (setting up apparatus/ tidying away) meant interaction with pupils wasn’t necessary.
He was hounded, laughed at, called names and teased by a few kids quite relentlessly however. The poor sod left the job after parents complained that he was rude to their darling dc.

You are so right! It makes me really cross when people use the word teacher" for anyone who works in a school. It's like calling the person who wheels the trollies in a hospital "a doctor" : people work for years to get a professional qualification - choosing the appropriate word is an important part of verbal communication.
