School fight recorded and posted on social media

Hi, this is my first time posting so hopefully I've done this right.

My daughter has started year 7 this year, at the end of her second week she got into a fight. She wasn't the instigator, the other girl (a renowned bully in her primary school - but that's another story entirely) came at my daughter from behind.
The fight was recorded by two fellow pupils and shared around on social media.

What's worse is the school didn't inform us. Neither did my daughter. We were made aware after seeing the video of the altercation online.

After this followed a whole weekend of cyber bullying towards my child, including a group of 12 children seeing her outside and chasing her home. They then sent photos of our house to her and hung around outside waiting to see if she'd leave the house again. I wasn't there myself to confront them, her grandmother was and didn't feel comfortable facing them all. I found out who the children were and dealt with it myself by phoning parents. All of them were apologetic and helpful, and had a word with their children.

On Monday this week I went into the school to complain about them 1)not letting me know and 2) the fact the fight was filmed on school grounds and the teachers didn't confiscate the devices of the two children who filmed it.

I fully expected the school to take action against these two children, a detention and phone home to inform the parents of what they had done. An apology to my daughter, even? As a parent I would be horrified if my children filmed something like this instead of calling for help and then go one step further and spread it around. I have asked the school for updates and have heard nothing back.

Am I being unreasonable with my expectations?

Did the school know this had happened?

Mum253867 · 21/09/2023 10:28

Yes I would expect a call from my child's school and ti be informed of videoing took place - if they were aware of it.

Your daughter was set on from behind and they gave her detention?

CountingDownTheHours · 06/10/2023 16:20

Did she/the school not tell you what the detention was for at the time?

But no, you are not being unreasonable with your expectations. I would have expected that both sets of parents would be informed on the day it happened, and would be furious to find out they knew it had been filmed and hadnt taken any kind of action against the kids who filmed it and passed it around.

How is your DD now? Have those kids stopped bothering her?

you're 100% right.
