Is there a 'type' of school that is worse for bullying?

I went to a public school and was very much the poor kid. I wasnt ever aggressively bullied but I was whispered about and sniggered at, even by the teachers sometimes for having crap shoes/non designer hairstyle etc. I really don't want the same for dd so as we could afford the fees but not the extras of private we've ruled this out. On the other hand though my husband is concerned our local state school is in a rough area so she might be bullied for the opposite reason. She is a shy, bright girl, is there a 'type' of school that would be best suited do you think? How do you know which school is the right one, it's such a worry.

Bullying can happen anywhere. Have a look at the schools bullying policy and ask parents of their experiences.

If the head says "we don't have bullying here", avoid. All schools have some bullying; the question is what do the staff do about it.

My DS is at private school, we selected it mainly on the basis of their pastoral care. The anti bullying policy is on their website and they are very strict about it. the school goes from 3-18 and has about 500 pupils, you can tell from the cars that there are some very wealthy people there, there are also some on bursaries. everybody seems to mix well, i have friends with older children there and they say that bullying does happen occasionally but it is reported straight away by other pupils and gets acted upon immediately.
