I am currently 5 months pregnant with my first child and overwhelmed by the amount of products available? I wish to breast feed but am unsure whether to use a manual or electric pump. Is there much difference and what would people recommend?

Honestly? I'd wait and see. You might not need to express to start with anyway. Do you have a particular reason for planning to express?

I expressed straight away because we had some feeding difficulties - I hand expressed colostrum and used an electric pump in the hospital. Once breast feeding was established at 3 weeks we introduced one expressed bottle a day. For a few weeks I managed with a hand pump but it was a bit of a bind! I got an electric pump - I chose the Philipd Avent because it was recommended by a friend. I'm really pleased with it - it's quite effective but its fairly small. I may well be using it to express at work so it's good that its small.

Other people like the Medula swing though so it's worth liking at that. Hope that helps a bit.

I bought the avent manual pump for DS which I adored. I was given a Medela swing,(also for DS) but the suction was never as good as the avent one.

On this basis I bought the avent electric pump when it came out, but I found I got a better suction with the hand pump than the electric and went back to the original one.

Hi - you've prob bought already, but have tried both manual and electric avents and now also Medela mini electric ... Still think manual scent has best suction!!!
