You can see where this is going

My mums friend reckons that beetroot turned her breastmilk pink

Answers on a postcard please....

Well it turned dh's pee red (you wouldn't believe how close we were to going to A&E) so not beyond the realms of possibility ????

thisisyesterday · 09/07/2010 23:55

i would imagine that if it could you would havve to eat an AWFUL lot of it (thinkikng of when carrots turn people orange)

i mean, beetroot goes into tummy and is digested.. that's why it will affect poo/wee

breastmilk is made by blood cells or something isn't it? so i can't really see how it would be affected unless you'd eaten serious amounts

ZuzuandZara · 10/07/2010 00:01

Prof - you would have been so embarrassed, and annoyed at queuing at A & E for red wee!

I know about red wee, poo and orange people, no idea how breast milk is made!

I want some people with pink milk to answer....

i've expressed pink milk before. but it was blood not beetroot!

Brollyflower · 10/07/2010 00:33

ditto thisisyesterday

Pink bloody milk tastes slightly salty/metallic (sorry tmi!)

ZuzuandZara · 10/07/2010 00:34

Ow

I'm pretty sure beetroot can make you produce pink breast milk. Other people think the same.

If it can colour your urine (and your feces, too, ime) then why not breastmilk?

ZuzuandZara · 10/07/2010 09:41

adds tonne of beetroot to shopping list in hope of pink milk

NQC, i can see that it would colour wee/poo because that's coming directly from the food you eat isnt it?

but breastmilk is made from cells around the breasts, from blood? isnt that right? so there shouldn't be food in it?

ZuzuandZara · 10/07/2010 13:26

Don't know why that was bold

Thisisyesterday, thats what I thought. Wee/poo waste product of food, breast milk something else entirely?

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2010 19:12

Feces is made directly from food you eat, yes. It's the bits you didn't use. But urine is, like breastmilk, made from your blood, more or less.

thisisyesterday · 10/07/2010 19:26

ahh ok, i am not big on biology you see!
i thought urine was just the water you didn't need from your food or something

NotQuiteCockney · 10/07/2010 19:54

No, not really. Urine is used to get rid of waste products from our blood. We have bits of food we don't need, but we also have other byproducts of our bodies that we need to get rid of, and those generally go via urine.

I once thoguht I had vanilla flavoured milk.In fact, it was because I was wearing a pair of (unintentionally purchased) perfumed rubber gloves.

As a lover of beetroot and asparagus i do however often have wee that smells nadl ooks very weird.

ZuzuandZara · 10/07/2010 21:06

NotQuiteCockney - amazing at the age of 38 what I don't know

Moondog - perfumed rubber gloves?!
Asparagus, which I also love, has a big effect on me, beetroot - nothing, not wee, poo or breastmilk!

Brollyflower · 11/07/2010 01:18

Would it be bad to plan to experiment by eating a tonne of asparagus to see if it gives the baby asparagus wee via milk alone ? I'm intrigued now . Pretty sure her poo smells of curry after I've had one.

Fascinating stuff breastmilk and poo . I can, however, live without ever having pink milk again. I'm not a kangeroo.

moondog · 11/07/2010 10:27

I can think of worse things to endure!
Do kangaroos have pink milk then?

sazziej · 11/07/2010 10:38

My midwife did a session about bf at this weeks ante-natal session - she said the food you eat can affect the taste / colour of breat milk - and did say that beetroot can turn breast milk pink !

Brollyflower · 11/07/2010 12:27

Yes, I've been told kangeroo milk is pink, but can't find a reference. Googling brings up info on formula for kangeroos!!

ZuzuandZara · 11/07/2010 23:20

Brolly, please do and let us know

Going to research kangaroo milk, not kangaroo formula though!

OP posts:
ZuzuandZara · 11/07/2010 23:29

Yes, lots of references to kangaroo milk being pink, or 'pinkish'. Maybe they are on the beetroot diet

OP posts:
Morloth · 12/07/2010 12:15

DS2 gets asparagus wee if I eat asparagus.

TigerFeet · 12/07/2010 12:19

I eat shedloads of beetroot but have never had pink milk

However I have expressed some greenish tinged milk in the past. Nothing whatsoever to do with mint aeros, I'm sure.

ZuzuandZara · 12/07/2010 12:23

I feel there is much research to be done here! Might start a multi coloured diet! Starting with mint aeros
