Feel flippin awful with a cold/flu...pharmacist says I can only take paracetamol, which is doing nothing to help my aches and pains.

Why can I not take Ibuprofen, yet I can give it to DS??

I never thought about that before! that's weird.

but still I only have paracetamol. hope you feel better soon!

Morloth · 06/07/2010 16:16

I take ibuprofen.

jaggythistle · 06/07/2010 16:20

I was given Ibuprofen after my c-section (had diclofenac (another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) at first) so I am pretty sure it is ok

MumNWLondon · 06/07/2010 17:32

Its ok to take ibubrofen but apparently 0.5% ends up in the milk.

pinata · 06/07/2010 17:37

I took ibuprofen for 7 weeks after c-section in may. Midwife and doctor both confirmed this was ok, as long as within the max dose

reikizen · 06/07/2010 17:42

Of course you can take ibuprofen (unless you have asthma & have reacted to it in the past). There is no evidence that it is harmful in any way but as no trials can actually be carried out on pregnant or breastfeeding mums for ethical reasons, the pharmacist is erring on the side of caution (as when you are pregnant).

Fab - off to neck some nurofen

Just read on nhs website that it's ok - so why does my pharmacist not know this? Would have though it was a basic/common question

OP posts:
MultipleHeadedFlyingPig · 06/07/2010 17:56

Because the pharmacist isn't able to advise it as safe as it can't be tested on a pregnant or bfing woman.

littlemissindecisive · 06/07/2010 17:58

How bizzare that the nhs can say its safe but she can't!

Anyway - off to dig it out!

My pharmacist (and doctor, and hospital nurse) said it was okay to take both ibuprofen and paracetemol (or ibuprofen and co-dydramol) - taking them alternately up to the max dosage of each.

Morloth · 06/07/2010 20:20

I did that for after shocks in the week after birth AngelDog.

AngelDog · 06/07/2010 20:26

Ah, good tip, Morloth, I'll remember that in the event of a DC2!
