dd is 4 weeks on thursday, and is gaining well (6oz a week the last 2 weeks). I have a little issue with very fast let down, but am just letting the first minute spray into a muslin to stop her screaming and getting angry as it goes all over her face... any other tips?

also- i have expressed some and have popped a bit in a feed today to see if she would take the bottle- which she did. She had 2 oz and then a little more sucky on me. Is this a 'normal amount' ?

if i was to make up a bottle of expressed feed for the hussband how much would be an average amount for her to take?

My 5 week dd took 2.5oz last night for the first time from dh out of a bottle. She then slept from 10pm till 5am as an added bonus.

DD was weighed today and is 7lb 12oz, not sure if weight would come into how much a baby would need. I expressed what I could yesterday and hoped for the best.

No advice on te

Hi, I'd probably express 4oz to be on the safe side. This is what my DD took at 6 weeks. I did exactly the same as you the first time I introdoced an expressed bottle - breastfed, offered bottle, then breastfed some more. Seemed to work for us.

iirc an average amount of milk required is 25oz a day (somewhere on the kellymom website - on the how much EBM milk to give calculator). I personally translate this into about an oz an hour as she normally has her bottles in the day. DH normally overfills the bottle as well.

Of course the normal range is quite wide (up to 30oz?) so most amounts would fall into this.

My take is that you don't normally know how they have anyway, so try not to worry. AND remember, don't compare amounts to FF babies.

Ahhh here the link

Morning, she took 3.5oz last night and slept through again. My boobs are like rocks by the morning though (small price to pay I know) so I express as soon as she's fed in the morning.

Still getting exactly 2oz in the morning and then 1-1.5oz in the afternoon. Wonder how long it will take to increase my supply?

ClimberChick · 30/06/2010 08:50

I find that if I express roughly at the same time each day, then by about day 4 I see a significant increase building up to a plateau around day 8.

I've never done it regulary long term, have been rather haphazard with it (though about to express most days as amgoing back to work) so I don't know whether the plateau stays or not.

It's normal to need more than one express per meal, as pumps arn't as effective in removing the milk as baby.

From my ante-natal group, most mothers set a target amount they want to express and stop once they get there. 4oz seemed to be what each of us had arrived at, but none of us were giving a EBM feed EVERY day.

Did you still offer the breast afterwards?

ClimberChick · 30/06/2010 08:52

oops jus't realised that you wern't the OP .

I really must go to bed

hollyoaks · 30/06/2010 09:02

Climberchick - not the op but thanks all the same. At the moment its taking me two expressing sessions to get the 3-4oz I want for the night feed that dh does. Was hoping I would be eventually able to get that off in one go. Still bf for the rest of the day, just had a go expressing so dh could give her a feed with the happy side effect that she has slept through for 2 nights.

Thegauntlet - sorry for the hijack

ClimberChick · 30/06/2010 18:45

FWIW I think that you will get to 4oz in one go at some point, would have thought at least 3oz. Just depends on how much time you have and how consistent you are.

MumNWLondon · 30/06/2010 18:51

DS2 (10 weeks) has taken 4oz EBM from a bottle.
