Dd2 is 5 wks old and exclusively bf. I bf dd1 until she self weaned at 14 months but struggled with ds. So far, so good. Bit jaundiced but settled and checked at hospital. Now feeding every 2-3 hours day and night and cluster feeding in evenings. Settles between feeds. Last weighed 1 wk ago and following centile line (75th). But bowels now not opened in >36 hours. I know this happens in bf babies but thought it was later than this. No bowel problems before and always perfect yellow bf poo since about day 4. Amount has been less in past week - about 2/3 a day. Should I worry?

Bf seems perfect - no pain or excessive engorgement. I think latch is good - certainly midwife and hv happy. No cracked nipples. Dd2 gulping away and enjoying her feeds. Still plenty if wet nappies.

Hi mollycuddles, congratulations on your second dd. Hopefully she'll soon produce a huge pooey nappy, and you will rest easy.
I think that it's about 6 weeks that the poops tend to slow down in frequency, so it's probably just normal development for her. Is she showing any sign's of discomfort? If not I wouldn't worry... saying that, if you are anything like me you'll still worry, so why not give your health visitor a call in the morning...if only for a bit of reassurance

HoneyNutLoop is right, breastfed babies may start to poo less frequently at around 6 weeks of age, it is probably the case that your DD has just got there quicker than others!

If all else is good, (and it sounds very good!) it shouldn't be a problem. If she does seem to be trying to poo you could try massaging her abdomen clockwise which will result in explosions! It is perfectly normal for some breastfed babies to poo as little as every 7-10 days...ime the volume of poo then tend to be terrifying. I used to stay at home when DD1 was due to poo!

Ah, I've read that things can slow down at a month, because you stop making colostrum, which is a laxative.

So as others have said, it all sounds fine.

Has she pooped yet?!

Mrsbuggywinkel is right that clockwise strokes on her abdomen can help...I was always a bit too nervous to try that with my two, and thankfully never really had the need. However sitting ds on my knee after a feed, head and chest in one hand, leaning him forward slightly, and rubbing his lower back in a circular motion ALWAYS had great reasults...you may want to sit her on a towel in fact

Thanks again. Yes she has performed

I am a little traumatised by the result.

LOL...good to hear! I'm presuming the trauma is due to volume and nothing odd!
