5 month old throwing up

Hi

DD is 5.5 months and on 5 bottles of 7fl oz a day. Has reflux and as been on baby gaviscon since about 6 weeks.

Over the last week she has been wanting more and more bottles but has then thrown up twice. First time was Friday she threw up I would say about a bottle and a halfs worth, half was curdled looking.

Then today she wanted two bottles in a row and has just thrown up everywhere again, covered me, the sofa, her etc. Again about a bottle and a halfs worth and again all curdled looking (lumpy)

She seems fine in herself else obviously I would take her to the doctor. It just seems strange that she's almost gorging then throwing up. Any thoughts or advice very welcome! Is it that she's hungry but too much milk is making her sick and she needs to start weaning? (grasping at straws here)

have you got a slow flow teat?

DeFluffy · 24/06/2010 14:23

i think its the 3month one, we tried going up to the next one and she didnt seem to like it. Do you think the teat is too slow or too fast?

possibly too much - sounds like she's defo hungry but taking too much too quickly - so you want to slow her down a bit - poss you could wind her or give her a little cooled boiled water during feed.

luciemule · 24/06/2010 14:39

maybe too fast and she's glugging it too quickly. Either you could get a slower teat or give her more breaks in her feed. Also, can you sit her up more whilst drinking?

SAF/Total - photos of the sick, just for you guys (!) are on fb .

Lucie - I think you could be right, will check dp hasn't changed teats and not told me.

Will try the breaks in feeds and I think we will start thinking about weaning at the weekend, i cannot cope with the regurgitated curdled milk it is gross!

Thanks all x

DeFluffy - You know my DS's history of long term vomiting so have my deepest sympathy with cleaning up puke.

Sounds as though she's gulping and getting her feed too fast as others have said. Is she on hungry baby milk, normal formula or breast milk? I'd say if she wants more, it's time to think about weaning. Is she showing any other signs of being ready, an interst in your food, chomping on her fingers, toys etc? Is she able to sit fairly well unaided?

Is she on any other meds? Omeprazole, Renitadine? Domperidone?

A million questions, I know.......

HELLO Mousey poppet!

Shes on hungry baby milk, shes always eating her fists and she is staring when we eat. No other medicines just the gaviscon baby stuff.

Because its suddenly started this week its either dp changing teats and not telling e or its the weaning i think, ie shes too hungry so drinking milk too fast and then chucking it up. In which case weaning here we come, she cant sit unaided though.

Does sound like she's hungry DeFluffs......

As long as you can sit her up and make sure she is well supported, I'd try the weaning too....... especially if she's already on hungry baby milk!

I have a brand new packet of Organix baby rice if you want it... I used to thicken DS's feeds with it at night in the vein hope it may stay put.

Pha.

It's not been opened and I'm more than happy to post it should you want to start DD on rice???

Just fb me your address........ xx

Had a look at the pictures, I know it looks like loads but it's amazing how far a few ounces of puke can go. btw DS was a big puker for first 6 months (probably undiagnosed reflux). Have to say that the puking dramatically improved once he started solids.... I don't really hold with the signs of weaning, did it by age.

DeFluffy · 24/06/2010 16:44

Total - only got 2 weeks to go till 6 months so will either wait till then or start this weekend very gently. Reflux is terrible isnt it?

The load of sick today was ridiculous, covered me, her, the sofa, the floor, urgh.

Did you enjoy the photos?

Mouse - thank you very much x
