Refusing one side

Looking for some advice please. 5.5 month DS is most unhappy whenever I offer my left breast. He's really fighting and struggling plus screaming like im trying to poison him. He's fine on the right side though.

I thought maybe just a bit of a slow let down and he was getting frustrated but he had a mouthful of milk when screaming. Thought maybe teething but he's been dribbling and chewing hand for months so nothing new here.

Any ideas? Haven't started solids yet if that makes any difference. Don't think this is anything to do with it but having a bit of a crisis of confidence about being the only person I know not to have starting weaning yet (want to do BLW and he's not ready yet)

Thanks

Hi LouLou

I know how frustrating this must be for you - I had the same problem with my dd2. I never did find out why but when she was around 9 months I gave up and just fed her from the right side. From then on we could just relax and enjoy feeding again ! We carried on that way until she was 18 months without any problems and although she had started weening, she wasn't (and still isn't) a great foodie and relied heavily on her milk.

On the cosmteic side, I didn't seem to look or feel too lopsided at the time and now, although there is a difference (my left side has faired better 5than the right ) it is so slight that only dh has ever noticed, and then only when I pointed it out.

I hope it all sorts itself out for you.

Hi Loulou
Just wanted to answer as I see noone else has just yet!
My ds periodically refused one side - not sure why but I found (on the advice of another mnetter) bfing from the refused side in the bath really worked and sorted problem. I think it just really relaxes them. Or you could also try holding him the same way round as when he takes the right breast - he would be more under your left arm and you would probably need to put some pillows to your left side to take some of his weight and help get him into a good position - hopefully he will believe he is feeding from your right!
BTW we did blw from 6 mo and it went really well - stick to your guns - you'll know when he's ready

Thanks for the replies. He was a bit happier on the left side today but now grumpy on the right! I think it is teeth as he was trying to get his whole hand in his mouth along with my nipple. I think he is also going through an easily distracted stage and theres too much fun to be had rather than feeding!
