Refusing to latch on

My gorgeous little man is 6 days old. Having difficulty getting him to latch on, one feed he does it after a little work, the next I spend 2 frustrating hours with hi, fighting against me and I end up having to give him formula which I am really reluctant to do!
Is this normal? Can anyone advise me what to do?
The midwife has advised me to feed him every 3 hours, but this little man just isny palying ball!

Have you asked the midwife to check your positioning? Do they call it "your latch" ?

Sorry. been a million years since mine were babies.

But didn't want your post to go unanswered. I remember what it's like when they're very new.

Hi Eirewego...how was your birth? Straight forward? Is he waking for feeds or are you having to wake him?
Spend lots of time skin to skin and keep offering the breast.
Get a lactation consultant in ASAP!!!!

fwiw, i had this problem with my ds who was prem (only by a month). I used to have her on top of the duvet at night between me and dh and sleep topless and she latched on all by herself!
also, i used a special hold on her where you hold her flat across you under the OTHER arm and draw her across onto the other nipple. Sounds odd but it works. Friends lay their dcs over their shoulders too.
and don't forget NHS breast feeding clinics which are fab and NCT breastfeeding groups.

Maybe he doesn't want to feed every 3 hours? Could you try waiting until he lets you know he is hungry for a couple of days?
