Overfeeding a BF baby?

Hi,

My DD is 8 weeks old and for the past 2 weeks I have inroduced expressed breast milk, which she takes no bother. Initially she would only take 3-4oz per feed. This week my DH has been off and has been doing the morning feed for me to let me have a long lie (bliss!) and my DD has been guzzling loads - 7.5 oz in one feed.

Is this normal or should we set a limit? Worried about overfeeding. Or is this like to be what she is getting when I BF her?

Luckily, I am able to express quite large amounts of milk in one sitting so there has been plenty of expressed milk.

Thanks

My dd took 7 oz when she was 3 weeks. Greedy bugger!
I asked my HV about it and she said that dd would only take what she needed and breast milk is so easily digested that its fine to give her as much as she wants.
You'll maybe just get some extra big nappies

I breast fed my two girls and found that they varied with what they would take. Quite often they would have as much as they could get and sometimes they would not want a lot. They self-regulate. If DD doesn't want it she will soon makit it very clear! But I doubt very much that it is possible to overfeed a breastfed baby.
They're very straightforward creatures at this age so try not to worry about the current guzzling!
Hope that helps.
Fi :-)

Well generally a bfed baby will not overfeed. But you do find that with a bottle they might take on more than they would from the breast as it's a different sucking action, easier and they will take milk quite readily when they possibly would refuse it direct from source. I'm not implying this is problematic necessarily but it is common for a bfed baby to guzzle down huge amounts of milk in a bottle just because it's different.

DS2 10 weeks will take an 8oz bottle and then want a breast feed as well, he won't however accept a second bottle of EBM.

He feeds like a demon in the morning on the breast and given how big they start out and how empty they are when he is done with that feed I wouldn't be surprised if he was taking that and more.

I reckon as long as the bottle is only once a day or so you can't overfeed her.

DD's dreamfeed was 8oz of ebm... Whatever works, I reckon...

Thanks everyone. Thats really reassuring. Its only ever expressed milk we use. Have not used formula so will just go with the flow and feed her till she comes off the bottle herself B-)

worst case scenario is that if she has guzzled down too much which can happen as it comes out quicker than from the breast..she will just posset it back up..not nice but not harmful
