bleeding nipples on day4, how to help?

My best friend has just had a DS and, at day 4, is really struggling with poor latch, leading to bleeding nipples. She very much wanted to bf but it is so painful that she is mostly giving formula. She is still in hospital but midwives are so busy that they aren't helping her much. She says she's going to give it one, last ditch effort, when she and her DS get home from hospital tomorrow, and has asked me to go round there to advise - I'm not a breastfeeding counsellor though, I'm just the only person she knows who has bf my own DC.
What should I say/do?

Tell her to get the help of a bf counsellor - for one of my friends it tooks weeks to get the latch right and for bf to work properly. It CAN be done - but if it isn't working then she has tried and shouldn't blame herself.

Thanks sundew.
She's called a helpline but they've just given over the phone advice - how do you get a counselor to come out and see someone?

Who did she call? When I phoned the NCT helpline and wept, they offered me a visit from a counsellor as soon as possible. Could she call them back and just ask if there's someone local who can visit her?

Has your friend got some Lansinoh? If not, get some if at all possible. It's expensive but worth every penny (and lasts for ages).
