Best formula for 7mo being weaned off the breast?

He's on 3 meals a day now and I am weaning him onto bottles from the breast. I have been using cow and gate but keep hearing that Aptamil is better - any truth in this? And should I be using first, hungry or follow on milk?

Many thanks!

What your baby will drink, what your corner shop sells and what is cheapest... in that order.

Aptamil is better... at marketing to health professionals who pass on their brand message in a warm halo of medical authority. Aptamil and Cow and Gate are made by same conglomerate I believe and look at the list of ingredients - the same more or less.

I switched to cow and gate from aptamil as they are made by the same company but C&G is cheaper! First milk or follow on milk is fine although follow on has more iron and can cause constipation.

Aptamil gave both my boys colic and projectile vomiting.
We had no trouble with cow and gate. Wierd considering same company but there we have it.
Friends of mine have also had the same trouble with Aptamil and i've also noticed people on here mention the same thing.

My bf baby had cow and gate quite happily the odd time and from 11 months when he quit bf, had the first milk until I put him on the follow on milk about 16 months. I don't think any milk is better to be honest, my 5 DC had a mix and are all fine!

Aptamil and Cow and Gate are made by the same company, in the same factory, in Ireland. Aptamil has prebiotics in it- does Cow and Gate? Maybe that could be why it upsets some baby's stomachs. As for first or follow on milk, that's up to you. Follow on milk has more iron so might be useful if you are worried his weaning diet might be low in iron but it was only really invented to get round the advertising ban so is not necessary at all and you can just stay on first milk if you want.

hackneybird have a look at these leaflets produced by UNICEF which give information about different types of milk.

There is one for parents and one for Health Care Professionals.

The latter is much more useful IMO.
