Nipple cream advice

Hello all,
I'm due in 4 weeks, and have bought some Bio-Fem Instant Moisturising Balm. Anyone tried it?

The instructions say that it "helps to prepare the nipples for breastfeeding during the late months of pregnancy and to prevent cracks when nursing". My midwife hadn't heard of it, but said to avoid products that soften the nipples, which surely this product will do as it's essentially a moisturiser.

Any advice gratefully received!

The very best thing you can get is Lansinoh nipple cream, it's great, don't think you need to use it before though, just liberally when nursing, you don't have to wash it off either, but make sure you're not lathered in it when trying to latch dc on as it can make nipples slippery. The best thing to avoid cracks is to get a good latch straight a way, have you gone to any La Leche League meetings yet, I highly recommend going BEFORE dc is born to give you some really good support in preparation for birth, I wish I had, you can find your local meeting online, they are lovely and you don't have to be a member.

Hi there Hiccups.
I'm going to a breastfeeding workshop run at the hospital next week, and will check out the La Leche ladies also.

Yes, I'm keen to do anything I can to prepare myself, both in terms of technique and knowing what to buy. I was intrigued by this Bio-Fem stuff because unlike other nipple creams you don't have to wait until you're sore to use it. I'm sure you're right though, there's no substitute for doing it properly!

Hi,

Nothing wrong with soft nipples! I second lansinoh. Used it after every feed and after bath/shower, reagrdless of the state of my nipples, for about 4 weeks, never had a problem. You only need a teensy bit, a little goes a long way. Good luck!

Lansinoh every time! Between and after feeds, no need to wash it off before baby feeds, it got me through a sore, rough, cracked start to BF.

Cold cabbage leafs give relief for about a second, then they warm up. Vasoline was ok but the washing off was torture when you have to feed so often in the first weeks. Its expensive at about £9 but so worth it, and it lasts as its very thick cream. Only wish I'd known earlier.

Lansinoh creams the best & you should be able to get in on prescription...I did!! Good luck
