Breastfeeders - When did your periods start again?

Mine haven't yet at (erm how old is she?) 21 months.

I'm thinking about it now because although I'm not in a MAD rush to have another baby yet, the idea is at the back of my mind as to when I will be able to start to try...

Mine started to come back at about 9 months, both times - but were irregular and light. Came back properly about a month after I completely stopped BFing both times - so 12 months first time and 13 second time.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 27/04/2010 18:12

7 months for me. DS was ebf until about 23 weeks and still fed a lot after that. They/we all seem to be different! at the people who were period-less for over a year, though.

sparkle12mar08 · 27/04/2010 20:24

10 months with ds1 and 15 months with ds2. Both times we had reecntly cut feeding right down to twice a day.

redflipflops · 27/04/2010 20:31

10 months (with all 3!) - once baby sleeping longer at night (still BF).

first one is always HIDEOUS for me though....

JackiePaper · 27/04/2010 20:35

god you lot are lucky, mine came back at 6 weeks both times despite both of them feeding 2hourly round the clock. Mind you I only have to wink at dh and i get pregnant...

Northernlurker · 27/04/2010 20:39

9 months with both dd1 and dd2 and a year with dd3 (still having night feeds later than the other two)

MarkStretch · 27/04/2010 20:41

12 weeks with DD and 8 weeks with DS. Both exclusively bf. I was ROBBED TOO!

LancashireDAFt · 27/04/2010 20:44

DS2 was 5 weeks old when my periods came back. He was exculsively bf till weaning at 5.5months I bf him till he was 26 months old.

I think I win the "I was robbed" prize!

Still waiting. DD is almost 11 months old now...

GreenMonkies · 27/04/2010 22:27

How can your period come back when your baby is 5 weeks old? I had barely stopped bleeding from birth when mine were that age!! That's so unfair!!

Any way. Mine were 14 months ish both times. I miss lactational amenorrhea......

dorisbonkers · 28/04/2010 15:42

Still waiting, over 18 months for me. I still feed regularly through the night though. Keep meaning to do Jay Gordon but she's teething. Plus in some ways it's been easier for me to just give in completely and go with her constant demands, rather than get het up about it and plan to stop.

I'd like them to come back because I have a condition called Asherman's and it took a few years for diagnosis, operation, hormone treatment to repair. If it had reappeared (I had a section so it's not theoretical) I'd time to sort it and I'm 38 so haven't got all the time in the world if I want another child.

dorisbonkers · 28/04/2010 15:44

A question, apart from someone above at 23 months, has anyone heard of longer?

TulipsInTheSunshine · 28/04/2010 15:48

when my second child was 12 months old (ie; i had dd, got pregnant with no period and had ds1 when she was 18 months and then had no period until he was 12 months)

am now waiting for it to return after dc3 who will be 15 months next week.

jaggythistle · 28/04/2010 16:33

"but the baby must be fed on demand, and not use a pacifier or be fed milk in a bottle - as this disrupts the hormonal cycle that suppresses the production of oestrogen."

That explains why mine has come back now when DS is only 7 months. He was EBF on demand, but I am now back at work, so he now gets EBM in a bottle which I am expressing at work.

Fascinating!

FannyLogan · 28/04/2010 22:34

First ovulated the day DD turned 18 months. Still bf on demand 3 days a week, not between 8am-6pm 4 days a week.

Expected AF back sooner than 18 mo given I have been back at work in the day for 12 months!

pooka · 28/04/2010 22:36

Ds2 is 8 months and still no sign. Think with dd and ds1 periods started at around this age, or maybe a little earlier. Unlike them though, he is still feeding about 3 times between 7pm and 7am.

Again · 29/04/2010 10:55

When ds was 2 years and still bfing.

Bumbleconfusus · 29/04/2010 11:23

8 weeks (joins the: I was ROBBED group of MNers)

sparklycheerymummy · 29/04/2010 14:32

ds was 11 weeks and slept well which was why mine started again....lucky he slept but unlucky they started again!!!!

Beasknees · 29/04/2010 14:38

my ds2 is 7 1/2 months but i haven't had a period since Sept 2007 when i got pregnant with ds1

Bumbleconfusus · 29/04/2010 18:41

beasknees - you must have practically forgotten what they are like by now? Though you have brought up the great point that you don't need your periods to start again to get pregnant... so unless this thread is about being able to wear white skirts and go freely swimming all year round then...

rosiejoy · 29/04/2010 19:00

ROBBED here too

Took until 6 weeks to stop bleeding after having the baby, then period at 7weeks. This happened with both my children!

Salbysea · 29/04/2010 19:02

about 9 months, I BFed exclusively and expressed for 6 months, after that he had formula 2 days a week at the CM

Elpis · 09/05/2010 00:22

Jaggythistle - not sure I believe that expressing makes periods return sooner. My DD is just over a year, ebf until she started solids at 6 months and I express four days a week at work, so she's only ever had breastmilk. I haven't had a period yet, though I did have period pains and a lot of discharge two months ago which coincided with her sleeping through the night. Nothing since - and she isn't sleeping thro' anymore... Go figure!
