How long is a normal feed?

Hi, my baby is just almost 3 weeks old and I am exclusively breastfeeding. At the start she fed for anything up to 2 hours with short breaks in between for winding. She was feeding every 3-4 hours.

This past week has been different - sometimes she will feed for 15 minutes other times an hour with breaks for winding. Can anyone offer advice on this - is she getting enough when she stops after 15 minutes? Midwife says that my milk is prob coming in more and she is getting milk easier and this is likely to be why she is feeding for less time - can anyone share with me how long their baby feeds for at a time?

There are also times when she wants to feed all of the time but will fall asleep afetr a couple of sucks then will cry when off the breast. Is this normal?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

my baby rarely feeds more than 5 mins at a time. guess as long as baby is thriving anything is "normal".

How often does your baby feed?

Mine both did about 15 - 20 mins at a time after the first week or so. Your midwife doesn't sound concerned, so I wouldn't worry! As long as she is feeding on demand and putting weight on OK then she is fine. (not that you should be fixated on the centiles though!)

My DS2 did the thing where he cried and then fell asleep really quickly - it turned out he just liked to suck to get to sleep! I got a dummy, and that worked like a charm. When he fell asleep quickly, I whipped out the boob and stuck the dummy in. He didn't even seem to notice and even when he did wake up, he fell asleep again in seconds. Alternative would have been a baby constantly hanging off my boob!

Good luck and enjoy your lovely new baby

4 months but she was like that from when the milk started. feeds every 2-3 hours during the day + once during the night.

Thanks for the advice - seems like its normal what we are experiencing. What a learning curve!
