Sharp stabbing pains in breasts - why?

Hello - have been breastfeeding my 6 week old baby with no problems up until now. 2 days ago I expressed some milk using an electric pump and have since had lots of very sharp pains in my breasts. Could this be from the pump (I did have it on quite a strong setting) or could it be the start of Thrush? Baby has no signs of thrush and my nipples aren't cracked.

The pains are in both breasts and are fleeting but very very sharp.

Any advice / info about your experiences would be most welcome.

when does the pain happen? is it at the start of feeding or expressing?

if so could be the "let down". every book i read said the let down was like "a slight tingling feeling"

for me it was more like someone grabbing my boob and squeezing it really hard

Hi thelittlebluepills. It's both during feeding and about an hour after. Doesn't feel like the 'let down' sensations I've experienced up till now. Thank you for answering.

sounds like thrush then -sorry - but at least if you treat it early should be easy to clear up -

hi echops, i suppose it could be thrush - check out kellymom website - but it could be pump related. i had all sorts of problems when i tried to express too much - really felt like i was 'straining' my breasts. fwiw i was using the medela mini electric but it didn't agree with me
