9 month old refusing EBM in bottle - NEED HELP - going away in 6 weeks

DS2 is 9m and BF and used to have a bottle of EBM every evening from newborn to about 4-5m. Long story short I started taking over all the feeds and he hasn't really been given bottles much since then.

Last week I left him with MIL and he refused the EBM from her but I thought maybe he just wasn't hungry.

Couple days ago I left him with DH for the day and he refused the EBM again all day long. I did BF him the morning and evening (and again in the middle of the night as he had missed 2 feeds during the day). DH said he notice he just chewed on the bottle teat and did not like it much.

I am going away for a whole weekend in May and am getting scared he may not take to the bottle now. He will miss about 6- 8 feeds over a 3 day period (1/2 day on Fri, full day Sat, 1/2 day Sun). Not going is NOT an option. I will lose over £200 (hen weekend) and he is my 3rd DC so dare I say, I am looking forward to a weekend away (selfish? maybe...but much needed)

Anyhow, could he have forgotten to take a bottle?

The teat size is still a "1" - could that be the problem?

He eats very well (mainly BLW with cereal and the like spoon fed) and takes to a sippy cup for water.

Have you gone through this and have tips/advice?

TIA

Why does he have to have a bottle? DS was always a bottle refuser so went straight on to sippy cups when I went back to work at 6.5 months. No problems!

try different bottle tops, we had a similar problem with ds, he never had a bottle and I had to stop bf suddenly. Took us a few days of finding something that he would take and ended up with avent soft zippy teats. maybe at this age he could go with an open cup?

Misspaella · 29/03/2010 09:40

thanks will try a cup instead.

misspaella, i have recently got dd2 to take a bottle by holding her facing away from me, i.e back of her head against my chest so she can still see what is going on in the room.
worth a try? i had tried everything unsuccessfully, till this!
good luck!

Im just wondering, it sounded like he got 4 BF in a day, is that right?

I thought by 9 months it would be one in morning and one at night?

I don't know, I can't remember now.

Reason Im asking is, I have a nearly 4 month old who refuses a bottle (eek).

My DS was great with it, he would take a bottle at night no problem and when I decided to stop BF as I weaned onto food at 5 months there was no issues.

DD is a whole different ball game. I started bottles of EBM at 2 weeks, if we missed even 1 night it was an issue the next night.

I got lazy and couldn't be bothered with the expressing so changed that bottle to formula and she reacted badly, think she has a dairy intollerence and now im BF exclusivly on dairy free diet. Trying to give her EBM is impossible now.

I have admitted defeat and the only thing that keeps me going is thinking, ah well, by 8/9 months it will be one feed in the morning and one feed at night.

Please tell me Im right people
