Food cravings when breast feeding?

I can't keep myself off the chocolate and cheese. I always like cheese but just want it more at the moment. Not normally got too much of a sweet tooth though and will normally only eat a bit of choc here and there. Have had similar when feeding my other dcs. Its been different foods but always sweet stuff and dairy. Anyone else get this? Is it the BFing that is triggering this or am I using it subconsciously as an excuse to eat nice things?

I had similar cheese cravings - I found out when my daughter was about 9 months old that very little vitamin d come into breast milk unless the mother supplements. 90% of the mother's vitamin D comes from sunlight action on the skin, the trouble being in the uk there is not enough uv to make any vitamin d between October and March and we often wear sunscreen.

Vitamin d intake in the child as been shown in observational studies to reduce risk of diabetes and other conditions and so maybe you should have a blood level checked for your calcium and vitamin d - it should be over 75nmol/L - not sure if this could be the cause of your cravings but worth a shot -
look on the canadian paediatric association website - they recommend breastfeeding mums take 2000 international units/day of vitamin d3

I'm with you on the chocolate!
Again, not normally a massive sweet tooth, but DH has so we always have a bar or two of posh choccy as he likes a piece or two as 'pudding'. He was complaning that I was scoffing it all the time so I've taken to buying cheapo morrisons own brand plain choc (27p !!) to feed my habit. Does the job!

Always loved cheese so no change there but am eating more cereal & milk. Used to have toast. Thinking about it, it's really more about the lovely ice cold milk. Maybe you are onto something!?

Chocolate all the time and I hated chocolate before I had her.
Cheese when she was first born but not so much now she is 10 months.

I'm bf & eating loads - a sweet tooth with biscuits, choc & cereals. When preg didn't eat like this at all as I fancied salty things.

snugglejunkie yes that cheap plain choc is great. I bought some of it to use in baking thinking it would be 'ok' for that but then I tried a chunk whilst making the cake and since then I've bought loads of it!

Malt loaf, absolutely obsessed with it since DD was born. Mmm.
