Ds 6 wks is exclusively breast fed. DD was for a year. Finding it harder this time.DS feeds at 7pm-8pm and then sleeps 8-12 (great I know) and then feeds at 12ish and co-sleeps and then weeks at 3am and is fractious and I get very little sleep between 3am+. Boobs feel huge and engorged and I could not sleep last night as so uncomfortable.Any advice to deal with 3am fractiousness, pain etc.

In despair last night I said I would switch to formula in the night. Not sure what my sleep deprived rational was for that!!!

My DS was also fractious around this time. Generally put him on the boob and he would fall asleep, but would then have to keep him cuddled up with me or he would wake up and soon as put down in moses basket. He was also grunting and very windy during this time too. We started giving him some gripe water at his 7pm and 11pm feed and this seemed to help a little, but after a few weeks he did seem to start to get over this problem.

In regards to the tender boobs - have you tried expressing - I huse the medela swing and it really was a life saver! Also meant DH could feed DS and give me a bit of a break and help them bond.

Not really sure if this is any help, but sometimes just good to hear that others have been going through the same!

I think I will start expressing although was concerned that might lead to even more milk produced and sorer boobs.

Gripe water has made some improvement and he seems to be ok taking it

Probably best just to express a little - to ease the pressure as it were! How long did it take your boobs to settle down with DD - by about 8 weeks things had settled down for me.

how often do you change breasts?

mummynumnum · 15/03/2010 11:26

Seriously they never seem to empty and change breasts each feed. Can't really think with dd but don't remember them being this sore!

try changing them less often (say every 2-3 hours) rather than every feed. If you have over-supply (which i did with the same symptoms) then this will help (in the same way as offering more sides per feed increases your supply)

Ok so keep offering same breast for couple of hours and then swop?

yes, feed from the same breast for 2 or so hours (or while it still feels really full). but you should probably check that your lo is gaining weight as he should as well

Put on over a pound last week so think he is doing ok
