Hope all still going well.

thisisyesterday · 07/03/2010 19:52

glad you turned up tiktok and NQC, was beginning to doubt myself then!
i know the telephone helplines aren't the palce for a "diagnosis" of any kind, but I had figured it was someone who had much more knowledge on the matter who could also be contacted late yesterday evening!

as a slight aside, tiktok, is the fact that baby is producing plenty of wet nappies relevant at all? does this mean that baby is taking plenty of milk or could it be a red herring?

tiktok · 07/03/2010 23:31

Fair enough, thisisyesterday....though a mother with a baby so young should be able to reach a midwife 24/7, and she is under statutory midwife care still.

Wet nappies are a sign the baby is hydrated, but not a sign of feeding effectiveness. Dry nappies would be a really late sign of something not right. So the fact the baby is weeing is not all that reassuring, in terms of whether feeding is going well.

PotPourri - how's it going?

wb · 07/03/2010 23:39

Well, not to contradict or anything but...

Ds2, breastfed, passed mercomium (sorry, can't spell that) 3 times in his first 24 hours then nothing for 10 days. I checked with our midwives that this was OK on days 2, 5 and 7 (I like to be sure) and they said absolutely fine, no problem.

Ds2 was absolutely fine, fed fine, put on weight fine just never poo'd much

OhFuck · 08/03/2010 07:08

wb, tiktok did say that it isn't necessarily a problem but it does warrant being checked out. It's far preferable to ensure someone seeks appropriate advice than to provide reassurances based on anecdotes rather than evidence or knowledge.

tiktok · 08/03/2010 09:02

What can I say? The evidence is crystal clear. Babies who don't poo several times every day as newborns need checking out - it is not ok to assume that all is well on the basis of what a midwife said to someone else.

In some cases, lack of poo is the first sign of feeding ineffectiveness. This is revealed when the baby is weighed and is found to be still losing weight when the normal weight loss of the very early days should have ceased.

In other cases, the baby is fine and the feeding is fine.

But no one on a talkboard can tell which category this baby is in.

NonnoMum · 08/03/2010 21:35

All v interesting; both the anecdotal stuff and the more medical-based answers.
Wanting OP to come back; been bit obsessed with whether or not her baby has pooed.
Do hope all well.

Moomma · 08/03/2010 21:56

My DS only pooed about once a week, if that, in his first six or seven weeks (after the initial meconium, that is). It was very upsetting, especially since he was small and jaundiced and I was paranoid about his feeding anyway. However, he put on weight (slowly) and now is completely normal about poo at six months. I really don't think there was any reason for it. He just didn't go.

All I'll say is that we mentioned it to HVs, MWs, GPs, BF counsellors - anyone who would listen, practically - and they all made this face: and then said 'well, maybe it's normal for him.'

Not going against anything anyone has said - obviously, as with anything worrying a baby is doing or not doing, get it checked to set your mind at rest if nothing else - but in case anyone is reading this and is inclined to panic, it doesn't definitely mean Bad Things. At least according to all the health professionals who saw him in that period. Which was a lot of them.

PotPourri · 08/03/2010 22:24

Thanks for your input everyone. Still no poo, but have had him assessed by midwife on sunday and HV today. They are happy he is fine. He is gaining weight, just about back to birth weight, alert when awake, settles well too, waking for feeds, nice soft tummy, no sign of distress. I am also in touch with a breastfeeding counsellor, and plan to go to a La leche league group this week to make sure the feeding is as good as it can be. If no poo in next couple of days, then they will assess again - am hoping DS will sort it out before then

Am pleased to hear that other people have had the same situation and it was fine. I realise that a talk board cannot diagnose, but it is good to hear that other people have had this, and that given the health professionals are not worried, then I shouldn't be either.

I had this with my daughter too. HV said not to worry unless it persisted for more than a week or so. Day six we took her to hospital for a check as we were anxious. She pooed as soon as we got home.

MinkyBorage · 08/03/2010 22:36

Ah, glad to hear he's ok. From about 2 weeks old ds only did a poo once a week, and I was told to see GP if he didn't go for more than 10 days, which I did, and they wrongly prescribed lactulose, which I didn't use. The minute he went on to solids he went every day.

tiktok · 08/03/2010 22:49

Glad his weight and other signs show he's fine, PotPourri.

Something like 90-plus percent of newborns poo several times a day, so he's in a minority

MinkyBorage, it is shocking that lactulose was prescribed for a baby of a few weeks old.

NonnoMum · 09/03/2010 11:23

Still waiting for your baby's poo!
When my DS didn't go for ages (day 12?), the younger midwife was worried, but a MW longer in the tooth told me her record was 14 days!
My DS was jaundiced too. Did find those early days a bit tricky, and he was my 3rd, but now he poos for England.
Well done with the weight gain!
And the good thing about BF poo, is that it don't reek like formula!

You go girl!

PotPourri · 09/03/2010 11:33

MW told me her record was 16 days! Hope it comes soon as I am such a worrier!
