sterilising bottles

Hello I am due in just about 2 months time, I find the whole concept of breast feeding unthinkable (due to the condition 3 kids left my mum in) so I have bought some Avent bottles and intend to buy a breast pump or formular if I am uncomfortable with the pump, but I am worried about cleaning the bottles.

Most of the sterilising liquids/tablets are so full of warnings I don't want to go anywhere near them.

Bottle steam sterilisers are expensive but I already have a large Tefal food steamer does anyone know if it's ok to steam bottles in a Tefal food steamer what is the difference between it and a bootle steamer other then the bottle one being shaped for the job?

Get yourself an Avent Microwave steam steriliser. Mine only cost about £19 from Boots, although that was on offer and usually about £26ish, but if you shop around you will find a deal. Doesn't need any tablets etc and is quicker than the electric version.

I'm due in 8 weeks and not at all keen on breast feeding. Yes I know there are certain benefits but I also know there are a lot of benefits on formula feeding too. My baby, my choice. I was formula fed and am fitter and healthier than a lot of women my age. There's more to being a good parent than breastfeeding, that's for sure, so you go for it.

Hi, just interested to know exactly what condition breastfeeding 3 kids left your mother in .

Not being controversial or trying to sway your decision, just curious!

That would cost more then a steam one as I don't have a microwave

Well I would like to try to give the kid the first stuff colustrum or what ever it's called but I have no intention of carrying on until he/she is weened, I am sick of the breast feeding pressure every time I go near the hospital, every anti-natal visit, every parent information class they ram it home and keep saying "make sure you book your place at the breast feeding workshop" it borders on bullying, I know for sure that when I give birth I will bottle feeding until I get the heck out of there and I am in fear that as soon as he/she pops out they are going to start going on about breast feeding it.

They would probably call child services on me as I did get very close to saying something non PC to one of them before and I'd be in no mood to hold my tongue on the labour ward.

Chewed up I think would be the only way to describe them.

i think the bottle sterilizers have a conrolled temperature so a food steamer may ruin your teats if too hot. do you have any carboot sales by where you live they always have the avent steamers there and they are usually in good condition.

Ahh I see that would make sense, many thanks I will have a look at ebay.

Look for a pump on eBay as well.
Dont go paying full price for one.
Some are brand new and most have been used once if you are not put off by that.

ryoko - i wouldn't expect your boobs to be the same as before if you don't bf. i think it's the changes of pregnancy and milk coming in that does it. i only bf for 6 weeks and mine are pretty knackered now!
you can pick up sterilisers for about £20-30 if you shop about. however if you are anxious about cost of that one off purchase think about how much you'll spend on formula. £7 a box and at one point we were going through a box every 5 days! it's not cheap.

BTW i hated BF and only did it because i knew about the benefits. once we reached the point where it was making me miserable i quit. so far ds has no more illnesses/ allergies etc than you would expect.

whatever you decide as long as you are happy that's all that matters!
