Going running whilst breastfeeding - experiences / ideas?

I'm looking forward to getting back in shape after DC2, and I love the endorphin rush I get from running so would like to start this again.

However, I'm worried about running whilst breastfeeding. I just got re-measured for new nursing bras and I'm a size 32G. So obviously I'm in need of some serious support or I'll be jiggling all over the place.

Has anyone BTDT with running (or even just exercising) during BFing? DC2 is now 3 weeks old and I hope to re-start brisk walking this week, working up to proper runs by about the time DC2 is 3 months old, so I can run the Race for Life this summer.

So, I need ideas on:

  • bras
  • duration / length of runs
  • should I breastfeed before I set off / pump, in order to run on 'empty' so to speak?
  • any risks other than bouncing boobs that I haven't thought of?

Thank you in advance!

I have run while breastfeeding both my children. As I'm a 32HH while feeding it was quite a problem.

Bras - normal feeding bra with a smaller running bra over the top. I used a shock absorber lever 4 in a 32G or 34F. Tight yes, but my boobs weren't going anywhere.

Duration - I started off just doing about 1 mile slowly and slowly increased to about 30 mins. Sorry to mix units!

I would breastfeed just before I went. It gave me maximum time to run, stretch, shower and get dressed before having to feed again. I never had any problems with my milk 'souring' but then I never really ran hard enough to build up lots of lactic acid.

Good luck for Race for Life.
