giving up bf and losing weight

hi, I've been bf dd for almost a year now and we're slowing stopping. I've heard that some people lose weight when they bf and others lose weight when they stop. Well, I definitely didn't lose it bfeeding, so I'm hoping that I'll lose it when I stop.

So my question is - how long did it take for the weight to 'fall off' (if this happened when you stopped) - weeks, months?

I put on weight after stopping bfing.

oh

hadn't thought of that, will have to steer clear of all the birthday cake that's flying around at the moment.

Yeah, 'tis really easy to put on weight when you stop BF. One gets used to the extra calorie allowance...

Agree with Belgo and Driven.

That's what happened to me with DS. Am determined it won't happen this time!

I'll buck the trend. I have bf 2 babies to well past a year, couldn't lose a pound while I was doing it, and as soon as I stopped I lost all of the baby weight (a good 2 or 3 stone)in less than 3 months. Some people just can't lose weight when bfing and I'm one of them

I think if you can keep in control of your appetite once you stop, the weight can fall off pretty quickly. Mind you, the same could probably be said while BFing, but I found I just couldn't keep control of my appetite while I was BFing - I ate everything in sight for 10 months!

FWIW, I made a conscious effort to be relatively active and not eat when I wasn't hungry, and probably lost a good stone within a month or two of stopping BF (I lost a good half a stone in the last month of BF too, as my enormous appetite finally began to diminish).

thanks everyone, we've had a very slow end to bf, kind of driven by dd. I've found that as I bf less and less, my appetite is less and less, so hoping that there won't be an abrupt change when we finally stop. Though not eating when I'm not hungry will always be a struggle for me.

I also found over last summer before I went back to work, despite a 'no sweet treats' rule, speed walking at least an hour a day, running about a hour a week, I hardly lost any weight. I've been watching the portion size since Christmas and have lost a couple of pounds.

I would be so happy to lose a stone within a month or two! I would be back down to my pre preg weight and be able to get back into my clothes (and obviously would need to buy some new ones to celebrate!)

So I'll watch my appetite and my portion size and keep my fingers crossed I'm one of those people who lose the weight when they stop bf. Though with all the first birthday parties at the moment, it's a struggle to keep away from the cake!!
