since coming home from hospital, my baby is quite sick. She's 4 days now but cant hold milk down it seems. i'm using blue top full fat as that will help her gain weight. should i try semi skimmed? please help!

Hi newmum,

Congrats on your new baby. She is probably being sick as she is unable to tolerate or digest normal cows milk.

Newborn babies need either breast milk or newborn baby formula. It is quite important that you start her on one of these and do not give her any more of the blue top or semi skimmed (or any other) milk products.

Dont worry we all make mistakes but I think it would be a good idea for you to contact either your midwife or hospital postnatal ward as soon as possible to get some more guidance on feeding her.

Seona1973 · 27/02/2010 20:26

do you mean you are drinking the milk in order to help her gain weight? Are you breastfeeding and think the cows milk is affecting her through your milk?

ruddynorah · 27/02/2010 20:29

newmum are you still there?

newmum1994 · 27/02/2010 22:22

my boobs hurt so dont fancy that method to be honest. whats formula? perhaos i should try the powdered stuff?

you may find that breastfeeding stops your boobs hurting so much - they could well be sore because they're full of milk ready to feed her.

Lovelymonster is right though, ring your midwife or the postnatal ward for some help.

ruddynorah · 28/02/2010 15:20

did you have your baby in hospital? did any of the staff there talk to you about feeding your baby? i almost can't believe you're asking what's formula, really? has a midwife been out to see you since you gave birth to see how the feeding's going?

Igglybuff · 28/02/2010 20:27

Is this for real?

If so, newmum get to your local supermarket and go down the baby goods aisle and buy some formula milk for babies.

Lulumaam · 28/02/2010 20:30

if this is for real, you need to speak to a MW urgently about feeding your baby

you absolutely cannot give doorstep milk to a baby , your baby cannot digest it and can quickly get dehydrated and v v ill

do you know about sterilising bottles etc?

what milk did you use in hospital>

did the midwife not disucss this ? it is usual practice for a MW to discuss how you intend to feed your baby before you are sent home

you need infant formula, the first type,
it is available at every supermarket

ensure you get one suitable from birth

you can buy ready made formula too which might be easier for you if you are not sure about formula feeding

you must not use regular doorstep milk, or regular powedered mikl, it is infant fomrula only

Honeypeckle · 28/02/2010 20:30

Surely this is not real

Lulumaam · 28/02/2010 20:32

do you have the number for the postnatal ward. it should be on your notes. you should call them and discuss this

do you have a steriliser?
if not, you can boil the bottles and teats etc to sterilise

ruddynorah · 28/02/2010 21:13

op?

Honeypeckle · 03/03/2010 20:53
