breastfeeding/waiting to ovulate again?

Hi there everyone, I'm breastfeeding my 8 mth old ds, he's also on solids by now, we do at least four big feeds a day. With my dd my period returned at 5 mths, but this time, so far - no show.

I was just wondering from all you breastfeeding mothers out there - how many months into bf was it when your period returned? Just wondering in case I go for baby no.3. I know once I ovulate I could become pregnant, but it would be handier to just have my periods back in full swing. Any advice or info welcome.

seashore I am wondering the same thing - dd is 13 months now and no sign of my periods returning.

I have returned to work so she has little milk from me for 3 days a week but probably still feeds twice a night and occassionally suckles to sleep in between. She also feeds a lot on my days off.

Wow, I didn't know I might have to wait that length, I thought things would settle out in pretty much the time frame as before. Now I'm getting worried!

My period returned at 12 months coinciding with my DS sleeping through and not requiring night feeding. I think he was feeding morning and pre-bed and very occasionally during the day. I conceived on the first cycle.

Thanks, so it's looking like it'll be a 12 mth wait for period. I'm surprised especially as dd was such a heavy feeder whereas ds actually does other things! He sleeps through the nights but does take a heavy feed from both sides first. I'm just trying to figure it out cause I had dd at 37, ds at 41, so if I went for no.3, I would have to get going on it.

Anyone else out there? When did you periods return?

At 9 months. DD is now 15 mo and feeds a lot especially at night. But am I ovulating? Would love to start ttc particularly as I am now 40. But don't know how to get her to cut down - protests are too much to bear and I am too tired to resist!

Thanks, looks I still have a wait to ovulate yet.

Anybody else? Come on, tell us, what month do periods return when breastfeeding?

Well, I am still BF my 18 month old and no signs of fertility here!
My older daughter BF til she was nearly 3 and I'm pretty sure my perios didn't return til she was 2. I have heard of a few other mums not getting theirs back til 27,28 months!
I had my last at 41, so also hoping to have them return soon.I just don't think I can wean, he's so attached!

My period came when DD was 4 months . I was very dissapointed and I couldn't believe how unlucky I was .

She is 7 months and still BF 5 times a day plus solids. I think each person is different and each body works in a different way. However we do not plan another baby

sweetkitty · 28/02/2010 07:14

DD1 4 weeks after lochia stopped, how unlucky was that?

DD2 13 months

DD3 13 months in fact I deliberately dropped 2 feeds so I could conceive another baby, had one period and was pregnant again

sparklycheerymummy · 28/02/2010 11:15

my ds is 11 weeks and my period has returned with a vengence and i am concerned my milk is drying up as ds was feeding all night and has been sleeping through!

seashore · 28/02/2010 19:41

So if we could face dropping down to 2 feeds maybe my period would return? Can't imagine ds allowing that or being able to face it myself, it's a tough one, should he already learn to share with a younger sibling that may or may not exist?

not sure seashore.... i feed ds between 5 and 7 times a day and mine has come back..... though i dont feed in the night which can trigger it!?

MrsHappy · 28/02/2010 20:29

Mine were early - 14 weeks both times.
DD1 was sleeping through 11-7 at 7 weeks, but DD2 is 16 weeks and nowhere near.
It must just be the way I am made.

DitaVonCheese · 28/02/2010 23:01

Mine returned just before DD turned one. In retrospect it might have been when I started work part-times, so was going two days without feeds for most of the day, but I can't remember exactly when I went back, so that could be wrong.

I think I've read somewhere that the average (for what that's worth!) is 15-16 months.

There is a thread over in conception for ttc while bfing - feel free to join us
