Ouch! Breast Discomfort

Scout19075 · 22/02/2010 17:35

Suddenly the top part and the side closest to my arm are really sore. I can't feel any lumps or see any red spots and it doesn't hurt to feed. I have fed from that breast and DS ate well, but it still feels a bit "firm". Any ideas?

Sounds like a blockage, a nice warm bath then really massage the area that hurts, sounds a bit funny but you need to massage it as though you're trying to squeeze the milk out, it might help to feed from that side a bit more as well, as your ds might unblock it for you!

Hope you get it sorted, be careful it doesn't become mastitis, if it gets worse or you start feeling ill get straight to the GP, I've had awful mastitis in the past but was sorted out quickly with a course of antibiotics.

If you're massaging it, use some oil - any cooking oil will do - as it stops you rubbing the skin too hard. (Warning: you may end up with a very slippery bath if, like me, you accidentally knock the whole oil container ino it!

Feeding whilst in the bath is also very good for clearing blocked ducts or relieving engorgement, so that might help - plus you get a clean baby, so two jobs done for the 'price' of one.

I get this a lot, especially if I lie on my side to sleep or wear one particular bra (which i have now chucked out)

Massage boob while DS is feeding, stroke downwards towards nipple and this should fix it. If DS is sleeping I get in the shower and massgae it while hot water running on it.

Second what hmmsleep says, if you feel flu like get to GP.

Soon after I posted last night I got so cold (which is normal for me, I'm cold a lot) I was shaking (not normal for me). Then I couldn't eat dinner and just wanted to go to bed. I tried to pump as DS didn't want to feed from that side but got very little out. But then, during the night, he fed very well from that side twice and I did massage while feeding him. Still felt slightly firm when he finished (and he ate like the little eating maching he is) but not nearly like it did before. Will carry on with that, and try the bath tonight.

Still a bit firm now, but had to feed from the other side as I was leaking like a faucet but it's a lot less "ouchy"/tender than it was last night. Am also not cold any more (more like on the hot side.

Wondering if DS's cold have contributed to anything?

Thanks for the tips!
