Painful breastfeeding

I'm sure that this has been discussed many times but I am having so much pain with when I breast feed that I don't know what to do and would appreciate any advice from experienced Mums.

My baby is only 10 days old and breastfeeds about every 3 to 4 hours in the day. I was told that his latching on was good but my nipples are now sore, cracked, dry and bleeding. By the evening I dread breastfeeding and he won't settle at night. He cries and fusses at the nipple and wants to feed every 5 minutes which is agony.

I would appreciate any advice. Thank you

I think you need to be seen by a breast feeding counsellor asap and get them to check your latch again because that really doesn't sound right.

In the meantime can you try different holds? You could also google the biological nurturing position which basically means the baby latches himself on. I found that very helpful when struggling with DS.

Sorry, just to be clearer, try phoning the NCT/La Leche league or association of breastfeeding mothers. All have helplines and can get someone out to you.

Thank you. I have phoned the helplines and they gave me some really helpful advice. The recent breastfeeds have felt better. It's good to know I can get more help if things don't continue to improve.
