Mastitis or thrush ?

Symptoms :
Redness on boob

Really agonising lumps in boob

Shivering with cold last night while actually very hot

Agony while trying to feed from boob

Splitting headache today

Exhausted and lacking in energy (usually very active) - I slept till 11.30 this morning, am usually up by 9 at the latest

DD has oral thrush for which she is being treated but I think this is mastitis. GP was supposed to ring but nothing so far and surgery closed at 4pm, they had no appointments. Guess I will be going to A and E

mastitis I'm afraid. Do you have an out of hours service rather than A&E? But agree you need antibiotics tonight. Good luck

Will they be able to give me a script ?

Oh god, yes. They won't come to you but it will be less of a wait than A&E, especially if you are bfing and have to take baby along (the horror!!) You will get triaged and wait for ever after all the severed fingers and half dead drunks.

Mastitis, and agree you probably need antibiotics.

Feed loads and loads in different positions to try and clear the blocked ducts. Also hot showers against your breast and plenty of massage and hold a hot flannel against your breast. Paracetamol and ibruprofen for pain relief.

You may need prophylactic treatment for thrush as your baby having thrush and you taking antibiotics will put you at high risk for this; I took fluconazole when on antibiotics for thrush, and GP had bf three children herself so knew exactly what can and should be prescribed while bfing.

Another GP told me they did not prescribe antibiotics for bfing women, and if they did, I would have to stop bfing. Fortunately I knew not to listen to him.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

hope you got antibiotics - i had mastistis but GP initially said it was thrush, got very confusing but nurse practitioner eventually gave me antibiotics bless her! Had every feeding problem going for first 3 months then mastisitis and THEN everything cleared up and got easier. Was a miserable time but glad i hung in there, honestly i don't think i have ever felt as ill as when i had mastitis..you have all my sympathy! All the best
