5mo DD2 has a poo every 3/4 days and GP suggested she is not getting enough breastmilk and I should give her water??

Went to GP today as DD2 (exclusively bf apart from the odd bottle of formula when I need to go out as for some reason I can't express anymore) has been not herself for a couple of days and, as we are supposed to go on holiday next week, I just wanted her to be check over to make sure she is ok. Anyway, the GP asked me if DD2 had a bowel movement today and I said that she didn't and that anyway she only has one every 3/4 days. She told me that obviously she is not getting enough fluids, suggesting that maybe my milk supply is not that great anymore and that I need to give her cooled boiled water every day now until she becomes more regular. What is she talking about? She is wrong isn't she? I told her that her weight gain is ok, but she said that that does not mean anything. Do I really need to give her water?

if you're getting plenty of wet nappies then i really wouldn't worry and carry on just as you are

hmm, come to think of it dd2 hasn't had a poo for a couple of days (she's usually a twice a day kinda gal)

My son pooed every 3/4 days after about 2 months until he went onto solids, and now he is at last a one a day boy. I hate changing pooey nappies when out and about so it was good for us! (thought the poos when they did come where massive so took a while to clear up.

My ds pooed once every 9 days between 3 and 6 months. There wasn't a nappy in the land that could contain him.

BF babies can poo 10times a day or once in ten days, I've been told.

It's normal, [b]jolouliles[/b], for breastfed babies to start pooing less frequently at around 4 weeks.

jemjabella · 16/05/2010 11:57

Oh butt, forgot bbcode doesn't work here.

Zara75 · 16/05/2010 13:48

Very interesting advice and strang advice form a GP ;-) It is pretty normal for bf babies not to poo every day. And 3 -4 days is nothing to worry about.

DS2 goes every 3/4 days now at 8 weeks. He is having a clearout right now in fact.
