Help! Nursing strike!

Picante · 10/02/2010 07:56

DD is almost 6 months. Has a v bad cold and won't latch on - she doesn't even try and turns her head away. Hasn't had a bf since Sunday night. She'll take some in a bottle so she's not starving.

Does there come a point where she'll forget how to latch on?

Any positive stories of coming out the other end of a nursing strike?

Oh no, poor you. As you know, this happened with me (DD same age as yours) a couple of months ago. I gave expressed milk for 48 hours and she went back to the breast really well after that. Expressing so often again was awful (every 2 hours to get enough to feed and maintain/ boost supply) but worked. I don't think it would now - I'd have to supplement with formula as I don't get as much when I express. The whole episode for us also coincided with a bad cold. Two teeth appeared unexpectedly at the end of it all too! I was so concerned with the other stuff that the teething went unnoticed!
I really hope things improve for you both soon. Lots of cuddling opportunities I hope.

brilliant stuff over on the usual place

what worked for me

  1. keeping calm
  2. being "available" for BF more than usual and 3)going topless in the house with the blinds down

Any improvements, picante?

Thanks - managed to get her latched on this morning and she was so sleepy she stayed on for a letdown yay! She can still hardly breathe but if I can get her on at least once a day I think there's still hope.
