i used SMA Gold because it was the only one i had heard of

formulas are much the same as each other

Hi, sprouts, you could check through the archives for threads on this, as it comes up quite a lot.
There is virtually no difference between the brands of infant formulas in the UK - the proportion of ingredients is controlled by law so there is not much room for manoevre. Health claims for added ingredients don't stand up to even light scrutiny.

She doesn't have to stick with one brand, either...she can change about and see what seems to suit her baby best.

Has she said why she only wants to bf once?

ilovesprouts · 01/02/2010 13:02

she said she just wants him to have the first feed !

They're all much of a muchness, some more expensive than others of course. And some are designed for hungrier babies or 'comfort' for babies with sore tummies, or organic etc. I would suggest starting out on one that grabs her when she reads the marketing speil on the box and see how it works out. Only buy one box to see how it goes, and if not agreeing with the baby, try another brand.

That's up to her what she wants to do regarding bf btw

I have used SMA for both of my boys.

tiktok · 02/02/2010 08:28

sprouts - your dd clearly understands that the way a baby is fed has an impact on health..does she think that stops after one feed? Obv it's her choice, and obv she may have personal reasons for doing one feed only, but it seems a bit fixed, if you know what I mean, at 5 mths pg, to be so certain she does not want to give more than one feed, and to be deciding on brand of formula.

What do you think? Is she making a truly informed decision here?

SilveryMoon · 02/02/2010 08:32

I used SMA for ds1. He became quite constipated and my health visitor told me it was a common problem with this brand, so ds2 had Cow & Gate.

Lulumama · 02/02/2010 08:36

i agree with tiktok here

it is fab she wants to give the first feed, the colostrum is like liquid gold ! is she worried about not being able to get feeding established? it might be good for her to find out a bit more about breastfeeding and the support out there before she decides to start and finish the same day !

wrt to formula, better off to buy hipp organic IMO, it has the least amount of added ingredients , or buy the one that is most widely available

formulas are pretty much of a muchness

ilovesprouts · 02/02/2010 09:38

Hanaflower's advice is sensible. Buy the one that you can get quickly if you run out!!
