Nah, she pops up everywhere, stopcopyingme. SHe's the bfc to the stars!

Trickle · 28/01/2010 19:57

Well I've never breast fed, don't have any kids (due 02/02/2010 before you get confused ) but guess what I probably still have quite a valid opinion - one you never ever hear.

I was BF till 3 yrs, remember it and can honestly say people in general talk out of their bums about this subject, especially when talking about child welfare.

I hate opinions based on 'my friend's aunt's dog did so it must be true' but for the record I have never had a filling in my life - my baby teeth were the best my dentist had ever seen, and my immune system is STILL amazing.

Like the mum said, you couldn't have forced me to if I hadn't wanted to - and it was always my pre-breakfast, still can't work out what all the blummin fuss is about - but that is probably because I actually understand the subject rather than making things up in my head.

It's one of the main bits of BF I'm not looking forward to - we do know a very odd lady who still BF's her 8 nearly 9 year old. It's tarnished peoples opinions of EBF - however she does many odd things and noone has condemned whole other entire concepts because of it. Almost everyone I know is very supportive of me breast feediing, but I'm dreading 6 months and if we go past a year I think I'll aim to have a copy of WHO guidelines to hand.

gah, i wish i'd been here to read all the deleted posts. have just watched the link - thanks royalty - and the mums were absolutely lovely.

am still feeding ds and can't see me giving up any time soon - he's 14 months - and i was always one of the idiots that said 'oh no, as soon as they've got teeth it's all wrong'.

mawbroon · 28/01/2010 21:49

Trickle - what are your memories of it?

My ds is 4yo now and I am pretty sure that he will remember it too. I am guessing that to him that it will be no big deal because it was part of his everyday life rather than some sort of oddity.

It's just that 'eeeeeew, you should stop before they are old enough to remember' is another pile of pish that people often come out with.

StealthPolarBear · 28/01/2010 21:57

wow Trickle I've rarely (never?) heard this from the point of view of someone who was ebf! Good to hear.
Yes, the remember thing is annoying, DCs might remember and be slightly embarrassed but IMO no more than remembering you used to have to go to bed with a particular rabbit, or have your mum pat your back 100 times, or have your dad read you a rhyme over and over again - no big deal but not something you'd want made widely public knowledge at school. At least that's what I'm hoping for DS>

Trickle · 28/01/2010 22:07

You know what memories at that age are like - it's more a memory of skin, cuddles and time spent with my parents (my dad would be in bed too) than anything else. I remember mornings and getting into my mums bed and having 1st-breakfast - that is what we called it, a bit hard to describe because it's more sensation and emotion than anything like the taste or even the actual breast or eating. It was my nice start to the day, quiet, comforting and happy. Saying that I remember that but not really breakfast afterwards, because there is more to it than food.

I also remember the day we stopped my dad took me away from the bedroom and my mum and straight downtairs for breakfast. I wasn't happy about that at all, it was a big part of my day gone - but I did also accept it.

That's one of the reasons I think what a lot of people say about it when they presume things is a load of tosh - kids experience the world in a different way to adults, they have different priorities.

sorry for the double post - I don't know what happened there

StealthPolarBear · 28/01/2010 22:13

oh that's so lovely, I really hope DS remembers it like that - sensations and emotions. He's probably a bit young.

I remember my aunt used to wear a T-shirt with a stylised picture of (I thought) a baby blowing a huge bubble gum bubble. The slogan was "Take good care of your baby". I had no idea what it meant or why giving a baby bubble gum was a good thing. I was actually an adult when the answer dawned on me. No idea why I never actually just asked her

ImSoNotTelling · 28/01/2010 22:29

Lovely post trickle

This remembering thing - why not? I can remember loads of things from when I was a kid that would be weird if they happened as an adult - but I was a kid and they were normal and fine. So the memory is normal and fine. I am sure that memory of BF would be a nice warm yummy mummy cuddle memory

ImSoNotTelling · 28/01/2010 22:32

I have to say this is only the second time I have seen LK in action, the other time was when she filled in on the wright stuff. I have been spectacularly unimpressed with her views. On the wright stuff I didn't know who she was, there was a phone in about marital sex. One woman called and said that she had her own rule that she had to say yes at least every 3rd time she was asked by her DH, even if she really didn't want to. LK said that it sounded like she had a great relationship and that was an excellent compromise

Sorry off track but there you go.

I have never seen CBC before in my head she looked like that other woman who put the babies in the garden. claire verity?

Lymond · 28/01/2010 22:56

I'm so glad I don't watch daytime tv, and I am resisting the dubious temptation of watching this on youtube, it'll give me hbp.

Ofcom says there website is down for essential maintenance, but I'll complain in the morning.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 29/01/2010 08:31

Has anyone had any response this morning from nct/lll etc?

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 29/01/2010 08:35

I'm sadly watching this am to see if anything is said. Not holding my breath though! At the end of the intrview you get the impression lk knew it had been slightly controversial- inviting them back for follow up interview.

Fibilou · 29/01/2010 08:41

No, nothing from NCT

Stroplet · 29/01/2010 09:06

The Mirror have picked this up

KnottyLocks · 29/01/2010 09:39

The LLL haven't had a response to their letter regarding the breastfeeding survey yet.

TheCrackFox · 29/01/2010 09:54

Another good article from the Mirror.

ImSoNotTelling · 29/01/2010 09:59

Go the mirror!

Was just explaining to DH about nestle. It is an amazing coincidence that they are so anti-BF and sponsored by nestle isn't it.

Also I don't understand why this is presented as a debate. BF is best for babies. That is a fact.

Would they run a survey asking the question - "Do you think that diabetics should use insulin?" No.

I assume that CBC knows that loads (hundreds?) of pregnant women will have been watching and will have been really put off BF by her comments - I am sure that on the basis that BM is like coke and very sweet (something a lot of people are extremely fearful of, especially with the obesity advertising) many women will decide to give their babies "healthier" formula instead. the implication was clear.

Does this make CBC happy as someone who claims to advocate BF?

Bucharest · 29/01/2010 10:03

I see the GMTV page on the "debate" now has lots of info from proper experts all saying the opposite of CBC etc. So they really should be forced to retract her comments, surely?

On an aside, notice that I was deleted (and now feel part of MN royalty ) too!

tiktok · 29/01/2010 10:07

Yay for the Mirror - Mumsnet is doing great with the Mirror these days.

Did y'all see this thread:

Fibilou · 29/01/2010 10:17

Go Mirror !

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 29/01/2010 10:19

What a shame such sensible advice wasn't included on the tv, just hidden on the website for a fraction of the viewing figures to find

even LLL are quoted, as well as Hils

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 29/01/2010 10:27

Even the GMTV breakfast club has heard that "Breast is Best"
V short article lost in a wealth of lighter weight subjects, but it is there what a shame they didn't research CBC before having here on

Fibilou · 29/01/2010 10:29

Am loving the comments on the site though, there are some gems

Come on then CBC, supply us with a comparison of the ingredients, nutritional, immunological and emotional benefits of breastfeeding past 2 compared to coca cola. I bet it would make interesting reading. About as interesting as your current midwifery and breastfeeding qualifications perhaps

KnottyLocks · 29/01/2010 10:44

I think this article describes the benefits of breastmilk brilliantly and explains so clearly why we should do it. Written by a man who remembers being breastfed as a child.

(From 2008 but really relevant)
