Here's what I want to say on the matter...

"Message deleted by Mumsnet"

What I will say is...

Aren't Ann Sinnot and Nicola, mum of extended-bfing child utterly lovely?

nickelbabe · 28/01/2010 14:49

aww, Justine, that's mean!
(only joking, it's very sensible)

i was most concerned by the fact that the author they had on didn't really get a look in.
they most certainly didn't ask her proper questions and it seemed like she was put on the sofa as a prop. it did feel like they were trying to push CBC's opinion and not the opinion of the author or the mum with experience.
it was badly thought out.
maybe they shouldn't have had her on at all, maybe just had the author on to talk about her book and then had a separate interview with CBC and a mum doing it...

ilovemydogandmrobama · 28/01/2010 14:51

Seems to be an issue with GMTV generally as this isn't the first time there has been misleading advice about b/fing.

Who decides the content? Producer? Writers?

That's who should be invited for a web chat....

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2010 14:53

I'm creating an homage to GMTV's piece this morning. I've taken my beautifully carved bookends and shoved a stiff, hardbacked book containing no research whatsoever between them. It's conceptual. Wonder if the Tate Modern wants a recce.

PotPourri · 28/01/2010 15:09

The mum was great btw. Really normal and unflappable. Not a hippy, not a weirdy - just a normal person doing what she feels is best for her kids. Good lass!!!

MrsKitty · 28/01/2010 15:43

Perhaps GMTV would like to invite you on to discuss your art?

Longtalljosie · 28/01/2010 15:59

It wasn't as bad as I'd feared - in that the bfing mum came across as normal and sensible. I'm fuming about the coke comment though.

I didn't see it this morning but am back from visiting a ff-ing mum who did - it led to a really interesting conversation about the whole relationship with bf-ing and comfort

Friend: "They were saying some mums breastfeed to comfort their children. You wouldn't do that, would you?"
Me: "God yes"
Her: Really?

She also said to me something about snacking which I didn't really understand until I saw the thing on YouTube.

thatsnotmymonkey · 28/01/2010 16:02

All my messages have been deleted by Mumsnet. Whoops! Must remember to word my opinions better.

I have complained to OFCOM about the GMTV stint this morning, it was so very unbalanced.

Seriously, could MNHQ engage CBC in a live webchat? That would be very interesting, we could see how her cola argument holds up under scrutiny from mn. I would like to see her answer some questions from tiktok.

Shame on GMTV.

TheCrackFox · 28/01/2010 16:14

I got 2 messages deleted - I am strangely proud of that.

Get a producer from GMTV on for a live web chat. I would like to know just why they have such an odd attitude to breast feeding.

Fibilou · 28/01/2010 16:19

I really don't see what the fuss is about BFing for comfort anyway. Surely one of the reasons children have mothers is to offer them protection, security and comfort ? I really don't see there is any difference to offering a child that needs comforting a nipple to giving it it's favourite toy.

Children need comforting, sometimes by cuddles, sometimes by feeding and sometimes just by their mums being there. I don't know why we seem to have such a cultural issue with that in this country.

dawntigga · 28/01/2010 16:21

I've had a message delted - does that mean I'm now a real member of Mumsnet?

mawbroon · 28/01/2010 16:48

Aaaaargh. I wasn't going to watch this because I knew how much it would annoy me, but I couldn't help it!!

CBC probably got the shortest airtime out of the three of them, but every single thing she said was nonsense.

I think even my 4.3yo ds (who still nurses) would know she was talking poo.

BertieBotts · 28/01/2010 17:01

Fibilou I often wonder about that. I wonder if it is another case of the bottlefeeding mindset being applied to breastfeeding - it wouldn't be a good idea for a baby or child to have a bottle of milk for comfort, because they would end up taking more milk than they needed. This doesn't happen in the same way with breastfeeding.

topsi · 28/01/2010 17:01

I got millions deleted!

Let's try something that is not a personal attack:

Clare Byam Cook gives innaccurate information to women through her books, her dvds and her appearances on programmes like this. Her books are full of myths that are not based on any evidence and a lot of what she says goes directly against respected recommendations, such as those from the WHO.

She is not regulated by anyone, and is accountable to no organisation for proving her continuing professional development, unlike Certified Lactation Consultants, LLL Leaders, NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors, ABM Supporters and BfN Supporters.

thatsnotmymonkey · 28/01/2010 18:29

Flamingbingo, you are spot on, very articulate

GreenMonkies · 28/01/2010 18:49

I have to say that this played out exactly the same way as it did when I went on LKT. Whenever you start to say anything that has serious impact or makes it obvious that you are talking sense and the "expert" is talking rubbish you get interrupted.

As for CBC, I'd like to strap her to a rocket too. She has no idea how natural term breastfeeding works or how older children actually nurse, when, why, how often etc. I'd gladly educate her.....

(sadly I was unable to get the day off work to go and film [shock horror, natural term bf'er who works!!] or you'd all have had to suffer me again!)

stopcopyingme · 28/01/2010 19:24

only GMTV could find an "expert" that seems completely against breastfeeding!
