I just snorted out loud at that. It's really really not funny though I wonder what the mums who put coke in their babies' bottles will make of that comment?? Just unbelievable.

Druidmama · 28/01/2010 09:32

My bfing 3.5year old wanted to know why that lady was being mean about boobies!

CBC just doesn't get it...when the DDs nurse for comfort it is about being close to me and the act of sucking which calms them down, it is nothing like giving them a bar of chocolate when they fall over!

Incidentally...was anyone else shocked at her saying (along the lines of) 'CHildren shouldn't snack at all between meals'?

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 28/01/2010 09:33

The mum tried to redress the balance by saying that she only fed in mornings, not as comfort feeding if upset etc , but ultimately to
most of the viewers CBC was the expert, so will be wasted.

Lorraine does more harm than good including these items- I haven't seen one that didn't frustrate me! She just really can not empathise with the mothers or their decisions, so rather looks on bewildered parroting the "expert", who unfortunately is CBC not tiktok!

Get tiktok on for a balanced sane discussion not a celebrity! Get mn royality on

Don't forget that GMTV are sponsored by Nestles. It is not in their interests to promote extended breastfeeding. I know they say that Nestle do not have any editorial input but in the current economic climate GMTV would not want to piss off a major revenue stream.

tiktok · 28/01/2010 09:37

CBC was a midwife. She stopped practising many years ago, and works without supervision or an accrediting professional body....unlike breastfeeding counsellors who have to remain registered, and who undergo regular, compulsory supervision and in-service training and updating, and to whose organisations you can complain if you are not satisfied.

However, there is a market for her sort of directive approach and even for her critical and sometimes not-very-pleasant attitude towards breastfeeding and breastfeeding women - there are sufficient women who will pay quite a lot of money for this, and of course this approach can be quite attractive for daytime TV producers and newspapers, as she can be relied on to say something quote-worthy.

BertieBotts · 28/01/2010 09:43

Exactly Druidmama - if you must make a comparison, I'd say it's closer to having a dummy when they fall over than chocolate etc. Which of course most people would be a bit about at age 4 anyway, but it's still more socially acceptable than breastfeeding at that age. Why? A dummy is much more harmful to the teeth, and children often walk around with them, hindering speech development which is impossible to do with breastfeeding, no inquisitive toddler would trade exploring everything for sitting constantly in a sling, latched on!

tiktok · 28/01/2010 09:44

Did she really say children should not snack between meals? This is preposterous. This is advice for obese adults who need to lose weight, not young children, who actually need to snack between meals. As any competent paediatric dietitian would confirm.

It is quite ridiculous that she is pronouncing on matters she is clearly unqualified in....as a flippin expert.

Why do GMTV seem so keen on putting BF down? It never seems to end up being on the side of BF.

MegBusset · 28/01/2010 09:54

Snorted also at the vox pop woman who said that "after 12 months they need the goodness of ordinary milk"

MegBusset · 28/01/2010 09:57

They seem obsessed with women BF past a year, which must be a teeny tiny proportion.

If they are so worried about infant nutrition why do they never focus on babies who don't get BF at all?

Druidmama · 28/01/2010 10:00

I think her words were something like ...blah blah bad as coke, I believe young children shouldn't be having any snacks between meals...

As though the reason behind breastfeeding being dreadful for older children is that they might not eat their dinner?! It is just so clear that she has no idea, ime nursing just doesn't have any impact on an older child's hunger. DD1 nurses for ages first thing then regularly downs a couple of bowls of porridge.

BertieBotts · 28/01/2010 10:06

Lol, she can come and do a study on my DS if she wants, he will have a long breastfeed and eat a huge meal straight afterwards, also, if he sleeps at the wrong time and misses his tea, or doesn't eat much at all, he will nurse all night trying to satisfy his hunger and eventually just sit straight up at about 2am and sign "food" at me. (At which point we come downstairs and have a midnight feast!) It just doesn't fill him up now that he is used to eating solid food, which is understandable.

I would like to know if CBC is really as bad as she makes herself out to be. I say this because I have a friend who was struggling with bf'ing and used her. Apparently she was very helpful and encouraging. Said friend was able to continue bf'ing.

I think she may enjoys courting controversy for the sake of media attention. What is it they say? All publicity is good publicity.

crankytwanky · 28/01/2010 10:52

I've emailed them and asked for a retraction.

Thanks for link to youtube clip.

Ali, CBC undoubtedly helps some mothers - she must do, otherwise she would not continue in practice as many of her clients are word-of-mouth.

essenceofSES · 28/01/2010 11:04

I saw this and it made me so angry!
My DS is 8mo and I'm proud that I'm still BF. So many people make comments to me though about when I'm going to stop. My mum implies things whenever she mentions me BF, eg: "O, DS, if you're teething, you're mummy will stop feeding you soon". He now has 6 teeth and it's made no difference
I will feed him as long as he and I are both happy with it.

The more I think about it the more angry CBC has made me. However I think the mum came across really well and they should have her on again
