Gaviscon causing constipation?

Tigerlily1 · 28/01/2010 08:50

My 10 week old ds is now on gaviscon for silent reflux and has improved with wind since taking it and much better at lying down etc. however, he is not pooing half as much and when he does it's a thicker texture. he is bf and ususlly poo is runny. is this normal?
i give him 2 doses of gav after most feeds. has anyone else found this happens with it? maybe i should give it less often? any advice appreciated.

Yup, my son has had a couple of doses and the poo now has a weird texture - looks a bit like marzipan. if he'll take a bottle you could give him a bit of cooled boiled water to help loosen things up. Mine won't though, so I have the same question as you.

yes, it is like marzipan! how odd. he hates bottles so don't know if that'd work. thanks anyway.

same happens with my 3 month old who is on gaviscon. She doesn't seem any worse for it really.

I do give her a little boiled and cooled water from a bottle now and then just in case she is dehydrated

I spoke to a friend who's little boy was on gaviscon and she said he was the same so I think it is quite normal.

My DD threw it up immediately. She does possett after feeds a little but with gaviscon mixed in breast milk she projectiled???

Is any other mums of refluxers finding BF impossible? Im struggling to feed her for up to 2 hours a feed. On off on off, screaming but not willing to give in even when I think she has had enough??

Hi there Tigerlily. My DD was in your position a couple of months ago but has now grown out of it

  1. How much Gaviscon are you giving her? Are you squirting 15ml of water/gaviscon solution down her throat after a feed? If so, see if 10ml has a similar effect. You're after the sweet spot where you give just enough Gaviscon to prevent the reflux, and no more
  1. Persevere with the cooled boiled water - they're more likely to take it slightly warm. If they absolutely won't, consider a Gaviscon-free feed (in the morning when stomach acid production is less?) to "let the poo out"
  1. If all this still doesn't work, consider Ranitidine (which is what we ended up on) or Domperidone. Olivo's little one ended up on Domperidone - if she's around she'll be able to tell you more. But Ranitidine worked wonders with us - although the effect takes a couple of days to build.
