A friend is bf her 5 week old but with a lively 2 year old running round, no sleep and the constant feeding is reaching the end of her tether!
She wants to continue bf but needs a reprieve. So, if she did want to start mixed feeding what's the best way to go about it? Which feeds can she drop which will affect her supply least?
She's fully aware that it's risky and definately doesn't have time to express!
Am sending her the link to this.
Thanks in advance

I did mixed feeding with my first child and over time my supply dropped, even though I was expressing regularly and before long she preferred bottles over me and I ended up giving up at 4 months.

I think it's ok to replace one feed at the same time everyday maybe if desperate, but I really personally think it's a bad idea to do more than that.

I used to eat porridge for breakfast and a massive flapjack (home made) at 10.30am as well as drinking lots of water and I'd find that would help my milk supply in the afternoon as I got more tired chasing after a toddler, when BF my second child, I also put Cbeebies on whilst BF to be honest

The Kellymom website has lots of ideas to help supply though.

But maybe someone else will have a better idea.

I've introduced formula at 8 weeks with DS2 and DS3. Going nicely with 10 week old now for last fortnight.

He has about 150ml at 6.30 - 7, then again at 11ish (usually takes a bit less at this time, but sometimes downs the lot).

This was on advice of HV due to slow weight gain and after initially feeling awful about it I have to admit it is working well for us (i.e. for DH who gets to sit down with a quiet baby at 7 instead os doing bedtime for bouncy older ones ).

Be warned though - I still feed DS3 twice in between those bottles, and at least half the time he wants another bf after the second bottle before settling down for the night. I don't think upping quantities of formula would work, it's just that small stomach / frequent feed thing IME.

Assuming his weight gain remains good now we'll stick with this as bf during day / night much more convenient anyway.
